Most Reliable Auto Loader

What is the most reliable auto loading pistol you've ever owned? I'm talking about stock out of the box - no mods. Any caliber (including rimfires). I'm not using this info to determine my next purchase. Just curious.

I'll start. This one has been a pleasant suprise. Its my Walther P22Q. I know this pistol doesn't have a stellar reputation for reliablility but mine (after near 3500 rounds) has never had a stoppage that was not caused by a cheap audibly underpowered bulk round. It just shoots and shoots and shoots.

A close second (if not outright tie) is my Beretta 92FS. Around 3000 rounds down the pipe with only two hiccups that I can remember (both with cheap Federal WalMart ammo).

S&W M&P so far.

Glock 23 was reliable, but only fired about 50-100 rounds through it before deciding to sell. Not a knock on the Glock because for all i know, that gun has fired 50,000 rounds by now without failure. But I can only affirm 50-100 round reliability.

My Ruger P89 is my most reliable. Not the most accurate, best looking, or most expensive, but it will shoot anything! I have shot lead TC reloads, HP's, FMJ light or heavy without failure. I even shot a few .380's out of it by mistake, and it still ran (don't try this!).

Other than a friend limp wristing my Phantom, I haven't had a single problem with any of my CZ's yet and they have thousands of rounds through them. While mine aren't stock, the modifications I've made would have the effect of possibly reducing reliability rather than improving it and yet the guns still run perfectly with whatever ammo I throw at them.

Also never had any problems with my USP in .40.

I have never experienced a failure from my glock 23, glock 27, glock 22, sig p226, or my hk usp.

The most rounds have been fired from the g23. I would have to check my records, but I believe I'm between 4000 and 5000 rounds.

Strictly from the standpoint of cycling reliability with any ammo I feed them, it would be a tie between Smith & Wesson Third Generation, S&W M&P, and SIG-Sauer P-series. (Not their 1911, which is one of the worst pistols I've ever had.) My Glock 19 is also extremely reliable, but it had some initial feeding problems with hollowpoint ammunition until the magazine followers were replaced, therefore is not quite in this "top tier." The magazine issue was corrected long ago. My CZ75D Compact (PCR) is ammo-"sensitive," not "liking" CCI Blazer aluminum.

Never had a failure from my Glocks...not even once: 17, 19, 21.

Had a Ruger P95DC that never failed either...not once.

Had a S&W M&P .45 that wouldn't reset...pull the trigger...nothing...not even a click. Two trips to S&W and they fixed it but I never got over that.

Had a S&W M&P 9c that never failed but the .45 experience left me soured. All but the Glocks are gone.

In order, with things they needed:

Dan Wesson Valor, 100% reliable but wouldn't allways lock the slide back when shot empty (mag problem). Switched to Tripp mags and Tripp rebuild kits in the stock magazine bodies to solve.

Glock 23, trigger springs and recoil springs. 100% except for a fail to fire solved by a tap rack bang, problem was a broken trigger spring

Glock 35, trigger springs and recoil springs. No real problems worth mentioning. Had a stove pipe, but that happens when you're shooting under a barricade with the ejection port pressed to the ground.

Ruger P95 recoil spring, magazine, polished ramp to solve FTRTB. Likes +P ammo best. Recoil spring is kinda soft.

Kahr P380 magazine plates needed crimped tighter to keep from falling off and ejecting my ammo all over isle 3 at the grocery store. Likes only hotter Corbon defensive ammo, not so reliable with cheap WWB.

Kimber CDP Multiple FTRTB. Piss poor magazines ate a chunk out of my frame and allmost damaged my feed ramps. Needed Wilson mags, Wolff recoil spring, and a little smoothing of the outside barrel finish. Polished ramp and throat of barrel. Removed Series II FP safety. It's now very reliable.

The other pistols I've owned aren't worth mentioning in a reliability thread.

What I've learned:
The Glocks eat trigger springs, but maintain decent function when they do. Even when my trigger spring broke completely, they still reset and fired 95% of the time.

1911's come with crappy magazines.

1911's are very reliable if you know what your doing. If you treat your pistol like a shovel you're better off with a Glock.

The Glocks now eat trigger springs 5 times more often now that I'm using aftermarket extra strength trigger springs for a softer trigger pull. Now I change the spring ever 1000 rounds. Haven't had a single problem since.

Glocks.... in the 9mm version. Its the standard for reliability.
(With the .40 caliber version... I recommend that you don't use extended mags. Just use the standard mags.)
I broke a guide rod spring in my G27...but that's understandable...after 5000 rounds.
(Well within the expected lifespan of that spring.)

My Sons had a Walther P99 AS and it also has been totally reliable. Can't say the same for his XD 45 or CZ 75 P01.

Oddly enough it was the first handgun I could legally purchase. A sig p229 .40 . Had the gun for 13 years and not one single malfunction and that includes using a 357 sig barrel off and on for years depending on what ammo I had laying around. Definitely made a "sig man" outta me. To be honest after having it as my only gun for 5-6 years I had started thinking most all guns never jam or fail.(dumb I know)

Traded her in on a Fn .45 tactical recently. Longer sight radius means I shot the 45 in tighter groups but in it's short life I've already had 8-9 malfunctions due to tight springs in a new gun(slide/mags). I hope the old girl is making someone else as happy as she made me when I had her.

XDM 4.5" chambered for .40 S&W. 3 jams in 4k rounds (I consider this completely acceptable). It has been awesome and definately the most reliable pistol I've ever owned. The only one I've seen that goes 500 rounds flawlessly (frequently in rapid fire) without cleaning. Even the cheapest ammo works perfectly in this pistol.

I'm what you might call a poor man's collector. I buy 'em, shoot 'em a while, and sell 'em to help pay for the next one. And since I'm no kid, I've owned ALOT of different gun's. Many of my favorites, multiple times. All guns are capable of malfunctions. Even the perfect ones can malfunction with bad ammo. I will list the few models that NEVER malfunctioned on me: Glock 23 .40S&W; Glock 20 10mm; Sig p229 .40S&W; Sig p239 .40S&W; H&K USP Compact .45; Para Ordnance p12 .45ACP; CZ 52 7.62x25; Beretta 21 .22lr; Kel-tec p32 .32acp; All AK variants; All SKS variants; All M1A variants; Benelli m2 12ga; and All revolvers and pump shotgun's. And now,.... for some of the worst offenders: Para Ordnance (older style) p-10 .45; Kimber Ultra Carry .45; Springfield 3" compact .45; Taurus polymer .380. I know some of your experiences may be different. Sometimes it's just the luck of the draw with guns. But I think It's worth noting that three of the four worst offenders were .45 1911 style compacts. I diddn't even notice 'till I was done. I hope this helps some new gun buyers, Mick

A Glock 19 that will be 21 years old next month that went 18 years before failing to feed a couple of times. Following a tune-up with new springs throughout, it's 100% again.

But I also have other guns that have been 100% reliable with many hundreds of rounds fired--a few of them with several thousand rounds fired through them. SIG P229 and P220, Ruger P345 and two other Glocks--a newer G19 & a G26. None of them have the reliability track record of that old G19.

I'm surprised that no has already mentioned the Makarov. My two Norinco Toks, one in 7.62X25 and one in 9MM, have behaved perfectly along with a little Iver Johnson TP22 that's never failed me.*

The above 4 guns have each had quite a few thousands of rounds run through them by yours personally over the years and they've all been dead-nuts reliable. The 7.62 Norinco did fail to cycle a few times but I found out that it was due to some slightly over-sized shells in some surplus ammo I had. The necks were getting stuck in the chamber & wouldn't eject.

* To be fair, I haven't shot any bulk-pack ammo through the TP22; it's always been hyper-velocity stuff as per the maker's recommendations.

You took the words right out of my mouth. The MAK is one of the most reliable pistols ever made. My East German MAK not only never malfunctioned but it never malfunctioned with any kind of ammo I fed it including some reloads. Come to think of it, I never should have sold it. LOL.

The most "reliable" handgun is the one that has had all of the parts properly fitted. Regardless of brand. For every Colt owner who claims that their gun has never choked (and I believe you) I have had plenty on my bench that had problems from sloppy QC at the factory. In the years I worked on these things I saw a lot more Colts with tolerance and fitting problems than Springfields. Colt used machines for many many years that were simply worn out from so many years of running them. Fortunately they have finally addressed the problem with new CNC machines.

Ruger Mk I .22
Ruger LCP .380
Ruger SR9 9mm
Ruger SR40c .40S&W
Ruger P345 .45
I have to list several because the all are reliable. Browning has a winner in the Buckmark, load it, shoot it and do it again, it's always ready and never fails. The Mk 1 .22 has had a lot of rounds through it since I got it in 1966. It's trained a lot of young shooters over the years too. The LCP lives in my pocket and has had nearly 1000 rounds through it in the past couple years. The SR9 is one of my favorite range pistols and has nearly as much ammo through it as the LCP. The SR40c and P345 have fewer rounds through them since they are relatively new. None of these pistols has given me anything but perfect functionality. All are moderately priced and a bargain if you're looking for a economical, quality pistol that works and works well it's hard to beat Ruger or for a good .22 The Browning Buckmark.
