Does anyone own an AR 15 in 45 ACP?
I have several AR's in various calibers and I'm considering adding .45 because I like the caliber in a hand gun. Ammo is always available. Looks like a good piggie thumper for close range to me.

Olympic Arms is the only one I know of.

I think there are a couple. But why rob yourself of the power of a 5.56 to go with .45?

Why go to 45acp? Close range stopping power. The standard loaded .45 gets it's highest velocity in a 16" barrel. Also it is a good platform to suppress. If you are looking for a carbine to match with a pistol I would look at The Mech Tec. It is just an upper but you can match the lower to several .45 platforms. It is customizable and has a more efficient platform.

Cheers,

Like I said, I already have several. They include several 5.56 in various configurations, 6.8, and .243 WSSM. I like variety. :)

I understand the need for close range stopping power that is why I ask why 45. If you just want a .45 carbine that is great. But if you are looking for SD or pig hunting it is not the best choice at all. 5.56 will have far more power than the .45
If you want a nicely suppressed round look at 300 Blackout.

I like the way scramasax thinks.

I shot one a couple months back. It was a lot of fun, but impractical and I would never buy one.

Well in that case I can't blame you. :)
.45 ARs of quality are hard to find. Most pistol calibers are 9mm because of cheap ammo, ease of finding mags, and the general love of the caliber. Oly is the only one I know of off the top of my head. I don't really recommend them for anything but you may not have a choice.

Oh wait. I think I remember seeing RJF had some they built. Not sure if they source from Oly or not but that may be a good starting point.

.45 AR = Ron Williams direct impingement. That's the cats meow as far as .45 ARs go. Blowback is just filthy dirty. The gas operated upper from Ron Williams is the best of the 45acp crowd.
