ANNAPOLIS -- A bill banning assault weapons is shaping up to be the major battle over weaponry this session, with the idea getting a nod from Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. and a broad swath of liberal Democratic lawmakers.

So these rifles kill people?
I carried an M16 in the army and never saw it kill anybody.
My friend has an AR15 and it has killed less people then Ted Kennedys car.
What a bunch of stupid sick liars these anti's are!
They think if you play nice with terrorist they won't kill you.
Why don't they just move to all the gun free dictatorships so they can hold hands and sing kumbaya in the gulag.

My ARs, AKs & HKs (all out of state :( )have collectively killed fewer people that Diane Finestein. She did CPR on a homeless dude and when he regurgitated, she blew his vomit into his lungs, thereby causing him to asphixiate on dry land.

A rally for the ban held two weeks ago at the Chevy Chase home of CeaseFire Maryland Executive Director Leah Barrett attracted a veritable mob of elected officials While supporters were meeting inside, a band of gun rights proponents protested outside.Interesting how those inside were described as a "mob" while those outside were not. I think "mob" about covers it.

Got a reliable, credible link?
I did a Copernic search on "feinstein homeless CPR" and got 67 hits. None of them mentioned such an inflammatory story -- not even the patriot mythology sites.
"feinstein aspirate cpr homeless" got 0 hits.
"feinstein homeless aspirate vomit cpr" got 0 hits.
I gave up at that point and I can say with impunity that I believe in my heart of hearts that your story is patriot mythology.

Assault Weapons Ban Is A Safety, Not Personal, Issue
I was very disappointed that Del. Warren E. Miller (R-Howard) chose to
personalize the debate over whether rapid-fire assault weapons should be
allowed in Maryland communities ["Officials Ready to Trade Fire Over Assault
Weapons Ban," Howard Extra, Jan. 15].
I began working to keep assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition
magazines off our streets in 1995, when I was chief counsel for U.S. Sen.
Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.). I did this because I knew that assault weapons
are the weapons of choice of grievance killers, drug dealers and deranged
lunatics, designed specifically to make it easy to kill large numbers of
people at once, and because they have no legitimate hunting purpose.
As a staff member, I worked hard on this issue behind the scenes for years
because of its importance to public safety and stood to gain no credit. And
I am pleased that the evidence has shown this effort to be successful. A
study by the U.S. Justice Department found that the federal assault weapons
ban was responsible for a 6.7 percent decrease in total gun killings in the
country, holding all other factors equal. The study also confirmed that
assault weapons are disproportionately involved in murders with multiple
victims, with multiple wounds per victim and with police officers as
victims.
It is especially ironic that aspersions are being cast by an appointed
state delegate who regularly makes cold calls to reporters to comment about
county issues over which the state has no responsibility, to "make a name
for himself."

This is patently untrue. That study stated that they could come to no conclusion as to the effectiveness of the law. The second statement would only be true if they considered all semi-automatic firearms to be "assault weapons".

If true, this reflects a lack of medical knowlege on Ms. Feinstein's part rather than negligence or stupidity.
There is a fairly high likelihood that a patient will vomit during CPR; it's something all EMTs and paramedics are taught to look out for, since there's no warning and the patient will aspirate (inhale the vomit into his lungs) unless he is immediately rolled onto his side so that it can drain from his mouth. You do *not* have to be giving rescue breaths to cause a patient to aspirate; he'll do it on his own almost instantly unless he's rolled, as an unconscious patient does not have the defensive reflex that would normally close off the trachea to prevent this. I do not remember if this is taught in Red Cross CPR courses or not. If it isn't, it should be.
Ever choked on food because you were talking while eating? Same reflex in action; talking overrides it, allowing food to go down your trachea instead of your esophagus. Only then it's really your own stupid fault; didn't your mother ever tell you not to talk while eating? I am generally amused by the number of 911 calls we get for people choking on food; (a) no one would choke on food if they weren't talking while eating, and (b) doesn't anyone know the Heimlich maneuver? It's not some incredibly complex medical procedure.

but Jim,
Didn't you hear?
The gun banners do think of all semi-automatics as Assault weapons:
The term —assault weapon“ must include any semiautomatic rifle, shotgun,
or pistol
that can accept a detachable magazine
and includes one listed additional feature such as a pistol grip, fore-end grip, or collapsible stock.
Quinter & Garagialola's string pullers see any semiauto pistol as an Assault Weapon

heres what Quinter was refuting above:
Officials Ready to Trade Fire Over Assault Weapons Bill
By Tim Craig and Ylan Q. Mui
With the federal ban on assault weapons set to expire in September -- and
little sign that the Republican-led Congress will extend it -- gun-control
advocates are taking their case to Annapolis. Several Howard County
officials are gearing up for leading roles in the debate on whether Maryland
should adopt a statewide ban.
Last week, dozens of local officials in Maryland, including three
Democrats on the Howard County Council, sent a letter to House Speaker
Michael E.. Busch (D-Anne Arundel) and Senate President Thomas V. Mike
Miller Jr. (D-Calvert) supporting a bill to outlaw the rapid-fire weapons in
Maryland.
"Assault weapons are the guns of choice for drug dealers and cop killers,"
the letter said, which was signed by council members Guy Guzzone
(Southeast County), David A. Rakes (East Columbia) and Ken Ulman
(West Columbia).
The bill is being sponsored by Del. Neil F. Quinter (D-Howard), who has
made it one of his top legislative priorities this year. Quinter said he
expects Howard delegates Shane E. Pendergrass, Elizabeth Bobo and
Frank S. Turner, all Democrats, to support his measure.
Some Howard County Republicans, however, hold a different view.
Del. Warren E. Miller said he plans to do all he can to defeat Quinter's
measure.
"I think Neil and a few others are trying to make a name for themselves"
Miller said. "I don't think there is really a need for the law. I think the
existing [gun] laws on the books in Maryland are very severe."
The rift in Howard's legislative caucus is putting some lawmakers in an
awkward position.
On Monday, Quinter challenged Sen. Sandra B. Schrader, a moderate Howard
County Republican, to support his bill.
Schrader said she is undecided.
"I don't like guns. However, when I grew up, my dad was a hunter and he was
an auxiliary policeman and he had a pistol and he had a rifle, so I've been
in both situations," Schrader said. "I think people have a right to own
weapons, but the type of weapons obviously determines if they should have
them."
Schrader and other legislators can be expected to hear Howard County Police
Chief G. Wayne Livesay's thoughts on the issue.
Livesay, who is president of Maryland Chiefs of Police Association, said
his organization will work to get the ban passed by the General Assembly,
which convened yesterday.
"I don't want to start equipping our police officers with assault rifles on
the street just so we can stay even with the firepower of criminals,"
Livesay said in an interview. "It is a safety issue for our officers and the
citizens of Maryland."
In 1994, Maryland outlawed so-called assault pistols. But, noting the
federal ban on assault rifles, the legislators did not include larger
automatic weapons in the ban.
Miller, who represents rural Western Howard, said the split in the Howard
delegation is a microcosm of the divide across the state between lawmakers
in less heavily populated areas and those in suburban or urban communities.
"I am sure if I walk into Columbia, they would support Neil Quinter,"
Miller said. "But I am equally sure if I walk into rural areas I represent,
you would not find a strong call to pass this bill."

I picture long convoys of refugees streaming southward down the Beltway across the American Legion and Wilson Bridges, gun safes loaded into rental trailers pulled behind long lines of pickups and SUVs, middle-aged guys driving while shaking fists at the rearview mirror, shouting till the spit runs down their necks in a rage: "SOCIALIST GUNGRABBING DEMO-RAT A-HOLES, I HAVE HAD ENOUGH!" they'll shout as they enter the welcoming boosom of the still free Old Dominion.
At least that's what I did.

*rolls eyes* You do realize that your statement there makes you sound as fanatical, juvenile and rabidly stupid as the worst of the liberals, don't you? If the story is true, Senator Feinstein deserves credit for at least trying to help, although I'd encourage her to bone up on her CPR training for the next time.

No, but your statement is as smug and anal as anything uttered by Sen. Fineswine. Try developing a sense of humor some time, you'll live longer.
You're stereotyping of Liberals as "fanatical, juvenile and rabidly stupid" is certainly all that. I wouldn't classify Gene McCarthy, Patrick Moynihan, or Robert Kennedy in that way. All of them are or were very intelligent men. McCarthy for example, taught poetry at the University where I did my undergraduate degree.
Many liberals are determined, intelligent opponents that I wouldn't make the mistake of underestimating. James Carvell and Susan Estrich are in that catagory in my opinion.
