Howdy folks, I am looking at either a springfield loaded champion, or a springfield EMP in .40s&w for cc and general shooting. Maybe 3gun as well. I have had a chance to shoot a champion and I really liked it, but I'm thinking that the EMP would be better for everyday carry.

Have any of you shot both of these? What do you think? For you guys with the EMP, how do you conceal it? Anybody with actual experience with either gun is welcome to tell me what you think
Thanks :)

I've got an EMP-9. Awesome little gun, conceals very well in a DonHume IWB holster. About the same size but alot more controllable than my Colt New Agent in .45ACP (and doesn't bite me like my New Agent sometimes does!).

I've carried the 5" GM, the 4.25" Commander, the 3.5" OACP and the 3" EMP...but, not the 4" Champion... and will offer this:

They can all be comfortably used for CCW if you are willing to alter your mode of dress to suit the size of the gun. I carry OWB and only in the hottest weather let that be a factor in which I carry. I carry in a paddle holster for casual CCW (Fobus) and a high ride for something more discreet (Comp-Tac, Blade-Tech).

The EMP is a great size for CCW, but might not be as comfortable or easy to use in 3gun as a larger gun...like a GM or Commander (there isn't much to choose between the two).

In .40, my experience has been that the EMP will be more reliable than a gun based on the full size .45ACP platform. Competitive shooters are loading their .40 cartridges long to insure reliable function

I haven't had any reliability issues with my EMP no matter what I've run through it. My Don Hume is the H715-M, the one I have is actually for the Colt Defender (bought it for my New Agent) but it fits the EMP perfectly. It's not the nicest holster out there, but it works for me.

Thanks guys! 2wheels I appreciate your input!

9mmepiphany, it sounds like you have an awful lot of experience in the concealing 1911 department; so I'm gonna ask what (if any) extra concealment options I have with the EMP over a full or commander size 1911? I have seen guys carrying the champion owb at 4-5oclock with an untucked shirt pulled over it, that seems like it might be the most comfortable, and I would be fine with that except I dont like to untuck my shirts, so other than IWB does the EMP have any advantages? If not I might lean towards the champion as I will be shooting it quite a bit.

+1 for the EMP. Mine is a 9 and an excellent pistol -- accurate, reliable, great in the hand. Scaling down the size of the 1911 platform to 9mm size was a great idea. I have carried Commanders, a HiPower, Glocks and the EMP, usually IWB. For that I favor the DeSantis Cozy Partner and the Bianchi 100 but also use a Galco. Actually the little OWB plastic holster that comes with the EMP works very well.

I've never been fond of 3" barreled 1911's! I carry a SA SS Champion once in a while, it's a very good shooter, easy to operate under stress, but it's heavy...I carry it most often in a Galco combatmaster, sometimes a speed paddle...

The advantage of the EMP over the GM or Commander size guns...including the Champion...would be it's shorter frame. The butt of the frame is a larger factor in concealment than barrel length, as it is the part that sticks out, to the rear, the most...this allows tighter fitting clothing and less compromise in the carry angle. I usually carry under an unbuttoned long sleeve shirt

My largest concern would be the reliability of either larger gun chambered in .40. I'm not a fan of the EMP in .40 either...mine is in 9mm and shares carry time with my Kahr CW9... as you are giving up a lot of the weight advantage of the smaller size

The Kahr is better suited to my shoulder holster of choice...the Ken Null SMZ

Thanks guys! And to clarify, If I get anything bigger than an EMP it will be in 45acp. And I havent ruled out the 9mm EMP if I go that route.

Well it looks like I need to find a store around here that has an EMP so I can handle it next to a bigger gun. But if my state finally gets around to passing open carry, I will definately go with a bigger gun. Thanks again everybody

The 40 weighs a little over 2 lbs, you need a decent holster for comfortable carry.

If I could do it all over again, I probably would have gotten the 9 over the 40 to save 6 ozs, but I will give it credit for being one the best shooting compact 40s you can buy.

Get the EMP 9mm, or the Micro Compact in .45acp.
The .40 is not a good round in my opinion.

Hating on the .40 is about the lamest trendy firearm bandwagon lately.

I see 3 distinct camps... those who suck at shooting the .40, people who can't accept change i.e. the 9mm or .45 is all you need crowd, and finally the other people say it sucks so I'll say the same bandwagon.

Even more so the .40 in an EMP is an excellent pistol... if you can live with the heavier weight of the steel frame.

I carry the champion using a crossbreed iwb holster. Never have a problem and it is a very accurate 1911. I think the 4" barrel is as short as I would go that can handle the recoil well while maintaining accuracy. If I would carry a shorter barrel it would have to be in 9mm. In my opinion this would offset recoil and maintain accuracy.
