Slide stuck back on a Sigma

Me and a few friends were out shooting at the range today and my friend was shooting my sigma 40VE when the slide just locked back after it fired. I can not get the slide to come forward at all now. The slide lock is free and not holding it. I cant see anything holding the slide but it will not go forward. I am going to ship it back the S&W but do yall have any idea what might be holding it? I can drop the mag and the trigger pulls still so none of that is binding it up. Thanks for any help.

The bad thing is that friend was gonna buy it from me once I get a new gun to replace it. Now he's not to sure about the deal.

I've no idea what could be wrong, but I'm betting S&W will make it right.

Have seen several Sigmas do this. They had to go back to S&W. The very first one I saw was brought onto our range by a woman who had just bought it. She didn't even get through one magazine before it locked up. I would not buy one or trust one.

I think I read something about installing the guide rod incorrectly.

What has worked on other guns is to pull the protruding guiderod forward giving it a little twist and let it snap back the 1/4" or so you pulled it forward. Repeat a few times.

It MIGHT properly seat the rod, solving the possible problem.

Do you happen to know if the problem pertains only to the .40 model?

It sounds like an improperly seated guide rod. It's not as common, but I've seen it happen with Glocks too.

Are you guys saying 'improperly seated' by factory or user after break-down?

PT92, Improperly seated by the user during reassembly after field stripping. It's harder to seat the guide rod improperly on a Glock, but I've seen it done.

I've had the same happen to me with the Sigma .40 I sold awhile back... The guide rod is usually the culprit from what I've seen.

I am not doubting any of yall as I am far from perfect and may have improperly seated the guide rod the last time I cleaned it. When this happened we only had 6 rounds left out of the 100 that I had brought with me. If I seated the guide rod wrong wouldnt it have failed before 94ish rounds? I gave the gun to a friend at work to give to his gunsmith soninlaw who is gonna give it a look for free. I really do not want to be without my night stand gun for 6+ weeks for s&w to fix it even if it is my screw up.

Bigbomar, I dunno in regards to the round count after reassembly. Having a gunsmith look at it for free is always nice. Typically I saw the gunsmith do a little tapping on the slide with a rubber mallet, and everything came free. I'm not sure exactly what the technique is though. Anyway, it'll freak you out if it happens, but it's usually a quick & easy fix for someone who knows what he's doing.

I sent mine back for trigger work and it was back in less than 10 days. I took it back to dealer late in the afternoon and 10 days later they called me and said it had been repaired and returned to them and they wanted me to pick it up. I think S&W is as good as they come for service.

S&W will be happy to send you a pre-paid label to return your gun, if you can assure them that you are indeed the original purchaser. I like to e-mail them, it sure beats waiting on hold.
