Ok, the 19-5 is sometime in the 1980s, after 1983. I'm pretty sure that the -5 indicates that the gun is no longer pinned & recessed.

I'll look this evening when I get home for information on your 41, and hopefully be able to pin down a specific year on your 19.

Thanks Mike I owe ya one(i got the model 41 for 250 bucks, lucky me ehh?). There are books out there that offer the ranges for specific years if i recall correctly. I havent had the money to invest in one so I come here for some assistance.

Trey,

One needs a book listing the serial numbers that have been used by the factory during a particular time period.

They're not coded to represent dates.

The best book on the subject is "The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" by Jim Supica and Rick Nahaus.

Model 19 was made sometime in 1984.

The Model 41 was made early to mid 1981.

I'll look into it! I have a 39(-B I think) that my Grandad left me (along with the remington 760 Gamemaster that I took my first Boar with). Your advice is much appreciated, as I am anxious to know more about these tools that my grandfather had. Sounds like I'll find what I need in that book. Thanks again!

"I may be old in years but i am wise beyond them Mike."

Don't you mean you may NOT be old in years?

May want to think the predicate phrase to that sentence... :D :neener:

Looking at an OLD post; but need help with S&W serial numbers / DOB
2 guns: "Snub Nose" .38 Spl.
1. SN: C 181991 - 5 shot rounded front sight. bbl= 2"
2. SN: J 11975 - 5 shot; front sight tapering down back to frame
both standard wood grips - typical J frame type.
Doing an estate confirmation of value.
Mfg. dates appreciated... I tried S&W and they are way too slow.
Thanks! Q2

Remember that DOM is an estimate. What S&W will tell you when you call is the date it shipped. It could have been built anytime before that.

Kew Too
J11975 - 69-70
C181991 - 48-52

you will have to call S&W to narrow them any further. My estimate is 69 and 49 based on other numbers I have seen.

BAD'... Thanks very much!! Close (within 10 years) is my best friend at this point.
This report is due in probate on Dec. 3rd. Could not wait for S&W to "narrow any further". Your help (and estimate) is really appreciated!

Best regards, Q2
