My needs (or rather wants) are auto, .40 S&W, prefer hammer (single or double action) not striker fired, with no backstrap safety. Maybe something like a Browning High Power (have one, just want .40) only .40 instead of 9mm with 5" barrel. I'm a lefty and need either ambi-safety or can be modified with left handed safety. I have a Springfield XD in .40 and love the round but have weak thumb pinch strength (arthritis). Trying to cycle the slide fighting the backstrap safety can be done but not safely without putting part of my hand over the business end.

The HK P2000 and P30 / P30L are probably the most lefty friendly hammer fired pistols on the market.

CZ 85B. No contest.
This.

EDIT: Wait... I don't think they offer the 85 in .40 S&W...

Jack, my mistake then. I thought sure it was. You could go with a CZ 75B SA, which has the ambi safety. If I were buying another .40, that would be it.

I could be mistaken also. The 75 family is so large that you'd be hard-pressed to find an individual completely familiar with ALL of them.

I'm highly impressed with the shooting characteristics of my FNX-40. I shoot it way better than my G27 or my Cougar 8040. The recoil feels very 9mm-like, even shooting max loads back-to-back with a Glock 19. It feels like it has half the recoil of my G27. And it's completely, 100% ambidextrous, down to the slide release.

The only thing is I don't like the mag release or the placement of the levers. Or the fact you have to remove the rear sight to clean the firing pin channel.

If you can live without a safety, as is my preference, then the SIG P229 is a fantastic .40 pistol. It has recoil almost like most other pistols have in 9MM in my experience.

S&W 4006 (ambi safety)/4043(DAO)/4046(DAO): not 5", but great guns for the .40.

Thanks for the good leads. So far, I'm leaning toward the H&K http://www.hk-usa.com/civilian_products/p30l_general.asp with the light trigger pull.

Why is it that everything I seem to go for is expensive? Champagne desires on beer budget.

The CZ 75b in .40 S&W is the 85B. It has an ambi controls like the 85B.

I think the CZ 75B is a great choice. I really like mine.

In polymer, I like the M&P 40. It is striker fired though, but a great gun.

Ruger has the world's easiest-to-operate slide.

You want the KP-944 (http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=257571335)
