Hello all,
I am interested in buying a suppressor for one of my rifles. I know that gas blowback can be an issue, especially while shooting left handed.

I don't have a lot of experience shooting with a suppressors, but I did get to shoot a H&K MP5SD during my last tour to Iraq. I'll have to say it was very unpleasant. Even with eye protection on, I could barley see a thing because my eyes were stinging so badly.

Out of the two semi-automatic rifles I would suppress, both are gas piston operated. One is a Springfield M1A standard. The other is a LWRC M6. Would the gas blowback from either of these two rifles be terrible, like that MP5?

Also, the rifles would be suppressed mostly for range shooting. I don't plan on using subsonic ammo for either. I would just want to get rid of the muzzle blast. I might take them hunting also. Which I understand is legal in Alaska.

Thank you for your help.

Does the M1A not have a way to block the gas? I thought they did, though I've had no experience with them. If you can turn the gas system "off," I'd go that route. You also wouldn't necessarily have to worry about bolt cycling if you DID shoot subsonic loads... just treat it like a bolt action. And .308 is great for hunting, so between the two, the M1A seem to ME to be the better choice.

To further refine my question, has anyone have experience shooting suppressed gas piston rifles. And if so, was the gas blowback a problem?

I don't seem to see many suppressed M1A's. Is that because it is bad for the operating rod?

Thanks,
Joe

I have a YHM Stainless 7.62 Phantom that I have run on my AK-47 (Polish 1960). No blowback on it. Sorry can't much help on any of your other question.

Hard to suppress the M1A because the muzzle threads are not the standard 5/8x24 typically found on most .30 cal suppressors. Other than that it can be suppressed no problem.

and you're good to go.

Subsonic ammo and cycling is an issue; but no crud in your face or scabs on your forehead like shooting an M4.

Yes I do, and no I have never found it to be a problem.

My experience is with a YHM can on a FAL. I also shot a .300 blackout on a piston AR. No issues there either.
