My "dressed up" series 80 Colt M1991

I had a thread a few weeks ago about how I had traded my HK USP 45 full size for a Colt M1991 and an FEG Hi-Power. Well here is a thread about the few up grades and modifications that I have made to make this economy grade Colt less economy grade.

First a little info about the Colt. It is an odd combo that is not seen too much theses days, a full size or Commander frame with a Compact model or Officers slide mounted on it. I will say that this pistol shoots accurately for such a short barrel and feeds all bullet types perfectly thus far ( SWC, ball, HP). It has proven it self carry worthy already.

I just wanted to make a few mods to make the pistol more comfortable and correct a so called weak point of the Colt Officers model.
First this pistol came from the original owner with a sweet trigger pull, and a nice Wilson Combat beavertail grip safety. The first thing I did was add some Colt checkered rubber grips and a Smith and Alexander checkered MSH for a real positive grip on the gun.
To correct the so called weak point on this Officers model I ordered a Clark Customs reverse recoil spring plug and a EGW oversized Melt barrel bushing. These parts really beefed up the front end of the pistol. The EGW bushing literally has no play and is nice and tighter than the original bushing. This was my first time fitting a bushing to the slide, but I got it fit fairly tight. You can tighten it by hand with some force but it takes a bushing wrench to loosen it when breaking the pistol down. The bushing came perfectly fit for the barrel and needed no fitting on the inside.

Last I ordered a set of Novak Carry rear sights for the Colt 1911. They work with the original front sight and do not require the slide to be cut for installation.
Here she is!

It looks good. You did great. Have had 2 of them since the late 90's. 100% reliable with any and all ammo. Is yours some special version of the compact? Or did someone put a compact slide on a gov/commander frame? My compact version has the smaller 6 shot frame.

It came this way from Colt. From what I have read, they did a few different runs of guns like this. The one that was like this was called the Colt Commanding Officers model. Although this one does not have a title labeling it like the Commanding Officer, it is one of those kind of runs in the M1991 series.
At first I thought of it as odd, but it has grown on me and I really like the balance of it in hand.

Yes...a Colt compact slide with a flush 7 round mag frame would make a great carry gun. In fact, if my next gun was not going to be a 50gi:D, I would look for this Colt 1991 Commanding Officer version...I still might.
