Woke up at 5 AM this morning in the Pacific Northwest, had camped over night on an island. Wandered out into the darkness to wait for a deer. Heard some rustling in the leaves, walked up to where I heard the noise, and saw nothing. Then walked dejectedly back down.. just happened to look to my left, and there was a black-tailed doe, just staring at me. I stared back. Put my ear muffs on, took the safety off on my Mossberg 500, aimed, breathed, pulled the trigger. She ran about 20 feet before falling over dead. My first hunt was a success! My group bagged 6 deer in 2 days! I had some ammo for some Canada Geese, but we were too busy with deer!

Way to go, Now you have become a deer harvester instead of a deer hunter. Should make for some nice dinners.

Did you use buckshot or slugs? What brand?

Just my .02,

I used Federal Tru-Ball low recoil 1 oz slug. The choke was IC.

Thanks boys! I'm planning to get some waterfowl hunting in!

Deer are such nice critters!

I'm really liking the versatility a pump shotgun brings to the table.

I'm really liking the versatility a pump shotgun brings to the table. Yup. The first firearm I owned was a Mossberg 500 12 gauge combo with vent rib and slugster barrels. It was a gift from my wife and father-in-law. It has taken many deer, rabbits, squirrel, turkey, and a few pheasants. Still have it, and it sees action every year. Hard to beat the hunting versatility of a good shotgun.

Good deal. I'm, looking for a nice fat doe for the freezer and as luck would have it all I'm seeing are little stupid bucks wandering around obliviously trying to find a doe in heat. I guess the big bucks and doe are in the thickets taking care of business.:)

She was a pretty good looking doe, but she was all by her lonesome when I came across her. I guess she was out of the bucks' league.

Or that buck was standing back in the brush watching you.

Congrats on your first deer and done the hard way such as camping over night, walking off into the countryside and effectively using a shotgun to get it all done.
