Today in my Cinematic Structure class we watched The Professionals by Richard Brooks, starring Lee Marvin, Jack Palance and Claudia Cardinale;). People around me were complaining that we had to watch a western, but I was over joyed. It isn't like one of those westerns where a stranger walks into town, but it was more like The Wild Bunch, but with a happy ending.:D There's alot of gun play in the movie and alot of toys to drool over. There were Colt Single Actions, S&W Hand Ejectors, a Colt 1911, Winchester Lever Actions, Mausers, a Maxim, a 1903(I may be wrong on this one), a Lewis Gun, and my favorite the Winchester 97.

At the end of class our teacher told us that it was shot here in Nevada and the very end is shot next to the Sloan train tracks. I pass it everytime I go shooting in the desert, I think next time I'll have to stop and take it in.

There's some very subtle firearm handling details by Lee Marvin in that flick that shows he knew his Gun-Fu...

quote:How the heck can you go wrong with Lee Marvin and Jack Palance. Not to mention Robert Ryan, Burt Lancaster and Woody Strode... Ralph Bellamy is great as the rich, self-satisfied guy.

I always enjoyed Woody Stode and his dynamited arrows. ("Blow it away like a French 75...."})

Lee Marvin knowing the tactics of the Mexican bandits. ("He's going to take off his sombrero, pass it above his head, and then cover his right hip....)

Burt Lancaster lecturing on letting the dynamite get too hot.... as he flicks a bit of nitro off his finger... bang!

And the great last line of Lee Marvin: "You sir, are a self made man."

The guns were very authentic. I enjoyed Marvin's use of a 1917 (possibly New Service) Colt revolver as a left handed gun. And the '97 Winchester shotguns.

Just out of curiousity, can anyone see any of the "young" actors playing a part in that movie?

Off the top of my head the only one I can think of is Monica Bellucci for the role of Mrs. Grant. :D

Great movie -

Another one that I liked a lot and it just showed up on DVD (bought it and watched it again) is "Once Upon a Time in the West (1969)" with Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, and Claudia (YES!).
