here is a little neck knife with a new acid etched finish that i am experimenting with. it is O-1 tool steel with a chisel grind.

Huh. Cool pattern. How does it feel with just bare metal on the handle?

it is comfy. no sharp edges. i wouldn't chop firewood with it, but i am pretty sure that is not feasibly possible.

what do you guys use to cut and shape the blades. I have been screwing around with a forge, my stuff isn't that pretty yet to say the least, and wonder what kind of saws or files you guys use?

metal cutting bandsaw for profiling. before that, i just rough cut the shape with an angle grinder and cleaned it up on the belt grinder. it can get addictive.

Forging can take more time to learn, but give a close to final product quicker. It is very beneficial to take a 2 day course on blade smithing and give you a great jumpstart on techniques. The ABS Youth Hammer-In takes kids from flat steel to a semi-finished blade in 2 and a half days of work with professional blade smith.

A lot of guys with a drill press will profile by drilling holes along the outline of the knife drawn on the steel. Then they'll cut a window and disconnect the dots.
