For quantities of 500 pieces, who on line has the best deal for either copper plated or jacketed 40 caliber bullets? X-Treme brand at TJ for $63/500 is the best I have found.

Rocky mountain reloading beats that by $16 with shipping included, for FMJ bullets (though pulled). His 'normal' price is $52, but if you use the coupon code found on THR, its down to $47. I ordered 3000 bullets a couple of days ago, and am satisfied with price, speed of shipment, etc. They have not arrived yet, but when they do I expect no issues based on previous reviews.

I've bought from RMR twice and been satisfied with the service and product both times.

Hey, I'm out of the jacketed 180 grainers but I have some speer TMJ 180's for the same price. Once I get the pictures taken they will be up. Also, I have plenty of the other 165 and 155 jacketed left.

I like the xtreme(got them direct from factory). Rainer (from Cabelas) is about the same price and performance. If you are willing and able to shoot lead, the price comes down and performance isn't much different. Pricing is pretty competitive so look for sales or discounts from everybody. Bullet weight and style also affect price. Have you checked powder valley and grafs?

Over the years, I have ordered various pistol/rifle bullets from RMR with very happy results. He actually sold Montana Gold bullets (my designated match bullets) cheaper than Montana Gold!

I do like the fact that he carries different brands and quantity options down to 250 rounds so I can try before buying in larger quantities (BTW, the price will decrease as you increase the quantity on your order). Some of his pulled pistol/rifle bullets have been significantly lower than comparable online vendor prices and his inventory changes often so I check his website regularly.

If you factor in free shipping and 10% discount (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=624206) he's running til end of November, his pricing becomes very tempting. I am well stocked in various pistol and rifle bullets, but his promotions make me keep ordering more. Good thing bullets don't spoil. :D

On a different note, Jacob (longdayjake (http://www.thehighroad.org/member.php?u=66795) on THR) is funding his college education (University of Idaho law school) with bullet sales and I for one would love to see another lawyer who is conservative and pro-gun. You never know, he might run for "bigger" office later on as many politicians start out being lawyers. ;) I support many conservative causes/charities and when I order from RMR, I feel like I am supporting a very good cause. Go Jake go!

I find that only cast lead is in my price range.
First, the thin-plated bullets cost as much or more than excellent jacketed bullets from Montana Gold or Precision Delta.
I shoot for accuracy, and my guns in .40 all like 145-155gn bullets the best. However, many are action pistols shooters who like heavy bullets with very fast powders. This is a recipe for KBs, and I would only go up to 180gn in .40S&W.
By making a base assumption that the OP wants to do action pistol shooting, I will assume that the bullets should have a jacketed/plated base with no exposed lead. Personally, after firing thousands of cast and FMJ bullets in my comped race guns and NOT seeing any lead on the comp, I am not sure how critical that is, but let's go with what "most" people seem to want:
Montana Gold .40 180gn JHP: $314/2500 (eq. $125.80/1000)--too expensive for me.
Montana Gold .40 180gn CMJ: $308/2500 (eq. $123.20/1000)
Precision Delta does not list a CMJ or JHP in .40.
Rainier .40 180gn P-FN: $117/1000
Rainier .40 180gn P-HP: $122/1000
Rainier .40 180gn P-FN is $246/2000 (eq. $123/1000), all prices from MidwayUSA
Berry's .40 180gn P-FP is $122.25/1000
Berry's .40 180gn P-HP is $123.71/1000
Mastercastbullets.com .40 180gn L-TC is $69.42/1000
Missouri Bullet Company .40 180gn L-TCFP is $38/500 (est. $76/1000)
Precision Bullets .40 185gn L-CFP Moly-Kote is $225/2500 (eq. $90/1000)
Bayou Bullets .40 180gn L-TC "mystery coated" is listed at $78/1000 (but I can't swear that the price is current).
All of the listed bullets, except the plated ones, are excellent and well worth the money (if you can afford them).
With my pocketbook, Mastercastbullets and MoBC are about all I can afford currently.

I realize 1000+ pricing maybe less, but the OP asked for quantity pricing for 500 bullets. ;)

Don't forget to use "bullets" in the "coupon" code box.

Also, if you are only going to buy 500, you might want to first try some sample packs to see what really works in your gun. Once you know, you can confidently order by the 1000 or, even better, by the case.
Bullets are going to trend up in price and now is a great time to stock up when so many fantastic jacketed bullets are available from MG and PD. You can always offer excess bullets for sale.

Midway freight charges are uncompetitive.
