Hi All- Having pored thru the web and coming up with nothing but "assault rifle" and "possible AK47" concerning the Ortega story, any ideas on what the MSM is trying to scare the public with this time ? If it's truly an AK, clone, etc., sorry to have wasted time or bandwidth. Thanks, wilco40

CNN reports it as a semi-automatic AK-47 style rifle.

Kingcreek: Probably ! Quiet: I have a bit of doubt with CNN's veracity sometimes. Any still photos or video (a few seconds worth) I've seen do not give a clear view. I was having wonderments due to it looking like a forend or stock, our in house humor here is it could be any wood furnitured rifle. Hence my use of "assault rifle", seems to us anything that is more black than brown, with or without a pistol grip, is construed as an "assault rifle".

Well, that's an improvement on the usual "semi-automatic assault rifle" term they normally use, which is an oxymoron.

Its only an oxymoron on firearms forums. Everyone knows what they mean. But whatever, in this case, the AK was used for an assault, thus making it an assault weapon.

In which case a large number of .22 rimfire pistols are "assault" weapons.

On the news they said it was a Romanian copy of the AK so I assume that would be a WASR.

OK, Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez fired a WASR from the Ellipse at the White House from 800 yards? And that's an assassination attempt? (I got no problem holding the guy for firing at someone or something and striking any occupied dwelling as an offense, but a charge of assassination attempt to stick would require evidence of intent.) Could he have been firing at someone on the Ellipse-Washington Monument area and the bullets happened to hit the WH? Hard to believe he fired a WASR at such a range in a credible attempt to hit an individual.

Perhaps it is blessing in disguise that the media are exercising restraint in putting out useless bloviating. It would be nice though to have some hard facts.

"Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez Arrested: Alleged White House Shooter In Custody In Pennsylvania", The Huffington Post, 11/16/11 02:48 PM ET
"A U.S. Park Police spokesman, Sgt. David Schlosser, said evidence in the car linked the gunfire incident to Ortega-Hernandez. But it was unclear whether the gunfire was targeted at the White House. "

The guy allegedly broke the law and if found guilty should be punished. Ironically though, he could have been more accurate with a bolt action rifle yet it is the evil "assault rifle" that is going to take most of the blame.

The ignorance of people never ceases to amaze me.

800 yd shot with a AK well at least we know he wasn't a gun nut. Because I doubt anyone on this forum would choose a WASR for a 800yrd target.

NOTE: I am NOT saying that any innocent human being is ever a reasonable target what I am saying is that if you were told you were going to hit a target weather that be, tin can or bull moose at 800yds I don't think your first choice would be a WASR.

BTW I have a more full write up on my blog.

It's clear he was shooting at the White House. Ortega-Hernandez told people that he “needed to kill” President Obama, who he referred to as “the devil” and “the anti-Christ.” His choice of weapon aside, his intent was pretty clear. When you combine intent with the two rounds that struct the White House I think an attempted assassination charge is warranted.

with the video that has surfaced in which he claims he is the "modern day Jesus", it is quite evident that he is mentally ill and is (at this moment and for the foreseeable future) a danger to society.

My (evil/black/assault) guns are defective. I have not committed any crime in over half a century.

If my target were as large as the White House, I could hit it at 800 yds with a WASR. Couldn't guarentee where though, and it will take a few rounds and a good spotter for ranging.

Good thing he was only using a medium power "assault rifle" and not high power deer rifle.

Wouldn't he have needed a rifle that would shoot more than 1000 yds to kill the president, as the Obama was across the country at he time he fired on the white house?

I love the fact that the guy could have turned on any 24 hour news channel and he would have seen that the President wasn't in D.C. that day.

This guy isn't a gun nut, just a nut.
