Good Ranges, Clubs, and Gun Stores Near Falls Church, VA?

November 17, 2011, 01:12 AM
I will be relocating there in two weeks.

I am aware of the NRA Headquarters range that is close by, but what about rifle ranges, gun clubs, and good gun stores?

I also like to shoot Action Pistol Competitions, so if you know of any, let me know.

Please help a fellow gun guy out. Thanks.

The nicest one is Fairfax Rod and Gun Club. They have 200 yard and maybe ever 300 rifle

(W.E.G. is a member here on THR and is involved there with HighPower rifle and posts in competition and rifle threads. Might be a good guy to contact. Membership is full but I think one can shoot at matches there. I shot their monthly Bullseye matches.)

There is an Isaac Walton League chapter in Centreville. I hear it is nice but I have never visited it, learning about it just before leaving. It too is full, but again, I think that one can shoot at matches. (don't know about their rifle offerings)

There is the Anne Arundle Fish and Game I shot Bullseye there and I have seen action shooting there while we were having matches. (more pistol and shotgun, not so much rifle I believe)

Quantico Shooting Club . They use the Marine base but I don't know too much about them. (as well as up to 600 yard rifle)

Thurmont I have heard good things about and knew several guys that shot there. (up to 300 yard rifle I think)

For Bullseye: it would be Fairfax, Anne Arundle, and 12th Precinct

good luck

Sharp Shooters is a 25 yard indoor range right off I-95 in Newington (Formerly know as Gilberts). Probably the best gun shop for handguns and semiauto rifles is Virginia Arms Company on Route 28 in Manassas.

Farther down the road towards Richmond is Green Top Fishing/Hunting store. I always stop there. One of my favorites.

There are some nice ranges down around Quantico. Access may be an issue, however...:-)

Fairfax is a very nice club. My only experience there is sighting in my hunting rifles though. Pricey and full membership when I lived in the area. You can shoot at the Blue Ridge Arsenal, they have a nice indoor facility. Its been a long time since I lived in NOVA...

I just moved from NOVA during July. The NRA range is good but is a pain to get to because of traffic. The IWLA in centerville has a nice range but they are always busy and they have a membership waiting list. Never had the chance to shoot at Fairfax Rod and Gun, they have nice facilities but when I looked into them a long waiting list and was rather exspensive. I was a member at Quantico but left because they had issues getting ranges open. I joind the Alexandria IWLA, it is actually down in Stafford. Not a bad drive if traffic is okay. Rather cheap membership for all what you get, nice archery range, has hours for wobble trap, covered 25 yard pistol and 100 yard rifle ranges, camp sites do come available sometimes.

I have been a member of the IWLA in Centreville (which is the Arlington-Fairfax chapter) since 1994. Best to go on weekdays if you can or hit it by 8:00am on Saturdays. We have a 100 yard handgun and rifle range with 16 stations, a trap and skeet shotgun range, archery, camp grounds, and a stocked fishing pond.

I am also a member of the NRA range at their headquarters in Fairfax. They have redone the range and lanes and it is quite a bit better than it was when it opened. It is an indoor 50-yard range and you shoot anything up to a .458 Winchester (no full auto and I bet no black powder). This is one you also want to hit on weekdays if you can.

Fairfax Rod and Gun is a large complex and has a number of offerings. I haven't been there since the 1980's, but I remember it being good. It's in Manassas.

Incidentally, I grew up in Falls Church... actually inside of the city limits. I am a native.
