I have noticed that WW1 1911's with "H and P" stamped on the barrel shroud command more pricewise. Why is this?..chris3

The "H" mark was that of Colt inspector Francis L. Hosmer. The "H" with serifs appeared only on the shroud of barrels for serial numbers 101 to about 6500; the "H" without serifs from there to about 25,000. After that, the H was placed on top of the barrel, either along with, or combined with, the "P" proof mark.

The reason specific barrels command higher prices is that if (for example) I have a 1911, serial number 12345, with a WWII replacement HS barrel I will pay money to have a barrel of the original type. Obviously, it is very unlikely to BE the original barrel, but it will let the pistol LOOK original, and it will bring a higher price.
