Hey guys I noticed there is a lot of talk about the striker retainer pin failing on the XD's. I also noticed that there wasn't too much information about exactly how to change them so I thought I'd do a tutorial.

1) Disassemble the slide separating the barrel, and return spring from the slide.

2) Press in the striker spring guide (circle on the back of the slide) and pull downward on the retaining plate. It should pull down with little issue but make sure you dont take your hand off of the back of the slide or the guide and the spring will come flying out.

3) Using a 3/32" punch drive the retaining pin upwards through the top of the slide. My punch was not long enough to punch it all the way through so I pulled it out with a pliers the remaining 1/8". The firing pin will want to spring out the back a little bit, make sure you do not lose it.

4) Replace the firing pin and start the new pin down through the top of the slide. Once it is started I covered the area around the pin with masking tape to prevent marring. Then continue to tap the pin in place until it is flush with the top of the slide. I then used the same 3/32" punch to finish tapping in the pin, it should sit about 1/16" below the slide.

5) Reassemble and you are finished! Some of you may want to touch up the top of the slide with some type of blue, but mine is by no means a safe queen.

I'll include a few pics, let me know if I missed anything or if you found it useful. I apologize in advance for the shaky pics, I quit smoking Aug. 2nd and the shakes haven't quite gone yet. I am also waiting on an aluminum striker guide, but if you can replace the pin replacing the guide is a piece of cake. Thanks guys!

I only have about 1,000 through mine and the pin didn't show any damage. I did it more preemptively than anything...

Pin breakage is usually due to dry firing. Better made aftermarket pins are available. Springfield sent me some spares at no cost.

I thought about it, but since I don't dry fire much, and when I do I use a snap cap I put it on the back burner.

Is the Browning replacement pin rolled or slotted? (factory is slotted)
Some folks claim the rolled units are better than the slotted units and some of the XD aftermarket sights are selling the rolled pins as replacements.

I posted some info on this subject here (http://www.gunrightsmedia.com/showthread.php?t=423623).
There's also a YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwX1GdoxLZs) that covers the subject.
EDIT: Just checked the video I posted above-it's not the one I'd seen earlier which covered only striker pin replacement, but I can't seem to find it on YouTube any longer!

If I remember correctly the spring roll split pin is the best. There are various grades of rolled split pins available. These are some of the best.
