Finally My First!

This was my 3rd season of deer hunting. The last two I spent with friends in MN and did not have any luck. Last year I was at least able to take a shot but missed. Well this year my luck changed a bit. I was able to go with my dad and my brother to a friend's property in WI, where they bagged a couple of deer last year. Not only did I fill my buck tag on Saturday, but I got a doe just before we were getting ready to leave yesterday. Both were shot within 50 or so feet from each other about 75-100 yards from the ground blind I was in. I shot the buck in the neck and the doe through the lungs. Both were bang-flops. Shot both with a Remington 700ADL Varmit in 308 and Federal Power Shok 150gr softpoints.

Next year I'll wait for one with a little bigger antlers, lol. They were 3" though, so they counted!

When I registered the doe they measured her teeth to figure the age and they said she was probably 4-5 years old. Wouldn't have guessed a deer could live that long in the area I was at with all of the shooting going on around me!

Yes, I had orange on, including my hood over my camo stocking hat. but I had shed it to roll up my sleeves and dress the deer. I put it back on right away on Saturday for the first pic, and was in a hurry on Sunday for the second one. Oops!

My brother and I learned a few things from the first pic for when we took the second :p

Thanks to everyone who has read the thread so far and looked at the pics! It was so exciting. The buck came into the field in front of me about 3p. When I stuck my gun out the window to take a shot, he spooked and ran off to my left into the woods behind me. The blind was on a corner of the woods with fields on two sides(front and right). So I exited the blind to the right and followed the road down the edge of the woods towards our tree stand to see if I could intercept him. He came running back up the creek bed back towards the field, so I ran back down the road to the blind, flopped on my stomach and folded down my bipod legs. It wasn't 5 seconds and he popped back out from the woods. He walked back out in the field about 60 yards and stopped to pick up harvest leftovers on the ground. I got my scope on him and popped him. I went over to my blind and my dad tells me that wasn't the same deer! So we send my brother back down the road to the tree stand to keep an eye out for the first one. About the time I get done dressing the deer my brother returns and tells us they popped out behind him as he was walking back to us, but he couldn't get turned around to take a shot, plus we had another hunter in the party in that direction and a shot wouldn't have been wise. About 10 minutes later we hear a shot over there, and sure enough, our buddy got the first deer we saw.

Then on Sunday morning my dad and brother saw three does crossing the field in front of the blind while I was in the tree stand. My brother wanted a buck, so he passed on them all.(He is 15. His first year hunting was last year and he got an 8 pointer on the run. He went hunting in MN also this year and got a decent 4 pointer, so he wasn't going to shoot unless it was a nice buck. To say I'm a little jealous of his good fortune and shooting skill is an understatement.) At about 1p, both my brother and dad decide to head towards the shop and start packing up the camper to get ready to head for home. My dad gave me the option of staying out and I took him up on it. I sat in the blind watching the field and checking the Green Bay Packers score on my phone. Looked up and back at my phone a couple of times and finally the third or fourth time these three does are right in front of me. I slowly lowered the screen on the window and got my gun in position without them noticing and fired off a shot on the second one in the group, which was the biggest of the three. I stayed in the blind for a minute or two thinking the other two would run off, but they just stood there. The other two wouldn't even leave the field until I got out of my blind!

Thats cool. I was just giving you crap. Don't see many gut pile photos. I may start shooting pictures of mine.

Way to get the double kill.

Hey congrats on the double up. Don't feel one bit bad about those horns, first off you can't eat them, and secondly the bigger they are the harder they are to come by.

You beat me by about 2.5" on my first one, LOL

Stick with it, once you reach the point when the pop out in front of you from no where, and you don't get that rush of adrenalin, and your heart don't start pounding in your chest you might as well hang it up.

Congrats on the fresh meat! It's always nice to get the first kill under the belt. I'd say you had a successful weekend. I've been hunting hard since opening day of rifle in NY on saturday and have only seen a few does, nothing with antlers yet. Good luck the rest of the season!

Congrats!

This is only my 2nd year hunting deer & got completely skunked.

Have already taken 2 nice, younger bucks this season & hoping for a fat doe over Thanksgiving.
