Saw the DVD "Open Range" couple days back, and it got me thinking about the gunfight scene at the end. I liked the film.
I thought about what I would use as a CQB rifle in a situation like that, and I wanted to ask the high roaders what they would pick.
I guess it is really no different than any other SHTF scenario, but it is always interesting to me what others think. The Movie story allowed time for the "good guys" to get ready with their gear before the baddies got what was coming to them, so if you had the time, and friends to call.......What would you choose?
I would be fine with my AK with iron sights.
I would also like a hicap mag Glock 22 and a 9 shot Moss 590A1 would complement my rifle choice-with plenty of spare ammo, of course.

PS, ummm, we can leave out full auto weapons here, coz they are a given if we all had the chance to own them.

This has been hashed out time and time again.

A more interesting question, in my opinion, is what you'd pick in the year 1886, 1900, 1920....

Old school SHTF, if you will...:D

That scene where Costner is trying like hell to shoot under the horses and through the water trough to get the bad guys is one of the most realistic on-screen depictions of shooting I've seen.. reminds me of watching my dad try to pick a clear shot at a deer.

OK you have time to prepare, you know THEY are a comin'. Why pick a rifle that shoots pistol bullets? Shoot 'em from as far away as you can, anything worth shooting once is worth shooting twice.

A heavy repeating rifle.. a large frame Colt Lightning or Winchester lever gun in say... .40-65 or so (think that was one of the Lightning's chamberings) or 30-30 if it was late enough. A brace of New Frontier Colts and a Lightning or Thunderer pistol hidden in a coat pocket, don't forget the Remington .41 derringer, 'just in case'.

Oh and a chunk of pig iron hidden under my serape.. worked in at least 4 films.

Sure took a long time for them bullets to impact after being shot.

Of course we know its hollywierd but next time you watch the movie notice how long it takes for the impact to hit after the rifle is fired. Funny.

You mean you can pick any weapon from any era?

I'd be on a roof behind the bad guys with a SAW, some grenades, and a pistol - any modern service pistol would do.

I think using firearms available from that time period is more interesting than choosing those made now. I don’t think 20 armed men with SAA Colts and Winchester lever-actions would be much of a match for a lone gunman armed with a tricked out M-14 and a couple of clips. (But, I could be wrong)

I’m not sure what year this was to have taken place, I bought the DVD but have only watched it once. If available, I think a Winchester 97 or two would have been handy or an 1887? lever-action shotgun. If I didn’t want to get up close I’d choose an 1874 Sharps in 45-70 or 45-90 and try and take care of the problem at a longer range. Again depending on the year an 1876 Winchester in 45-60 or an 1886 Winchester in 45-70 or 50-110 might be the ticket. Or I guess you could use the Chow Young Fat approach and just carry eight SAA Colts and just throw them away when empty.

Since it was a fairly long gun fight, if you had a limited number of guns available I’d want something that I could reload quickly. In that case I like a S&W Schofield? break top, because SAA’s take a while to reload.

You said "gear" not "firearms" so I pick an M1-A2 Abrams and two friends to load/drive. :D

In the movie when they buried Bubba, the year ending was 1882
Lever best bet if'n you had one was a "73 or yellowboy IMHO.

My stoeger coach won't do that kinda damage:scrutiny:
