AR-15 shooting position and ergonomics

I received a Bushmaster Ar-15 for Christmas (thanks, Santa-me).

When shooting it, I've noticed that my right wrist (I'm right handed, right-eyed) is bent at an uncomfortable angle if my right arm is held in the elbow-high position. If I bring my elbow down my wrist is comfortable but then I loose the "shoulder pocket" to hold the rifle in.

Any thoughts on this issue?

I have the 16 inch Shorty rifle. I like a short stock, but is this one too short?

On a related note, I would like to replace the factory pistol grip with a better one. I'm looking for one without finger grooves. Any ideas?

One does not use the "high elbow" method for the AR. Instead, use the pistol grip to pull the rifle into the shoulder.
