Get any of the following:
Rem 870
Moss 500
Win 1300
Ithaca 37
with a 18.5" to 22" barrel and make sure the stock fits you, Find a good sling for carry, an extended Mag tube maybe, then BA/UU/R

Shoot it till it feels right, then see if you want to add any thing, then maybe add a side saddle and sights. Then BA/UU/R

You should have no problem finding a really good condition used Remington 870 with slug barrel with Iron sights for well under $400. Heck you can even get a new one for under $400.

Personally I would go used though. Replace the follower with a high visibility type such as those from Scattergun Technology, throw in a jumbo head safety and I'd say you are all set except for the ammo. All in all $400 should set you up nicely even with some $$ left for the ammo.

"Tactical" is as slippery a concept as morality. For shotguns on which human life may depend for protection, I prefer the term "Serious".

If a "Serious" shotgun is what you want, I suggest getting a Big Four pump. That's the Winchester 1300, Ithaca 37, Mossberg 500-590, and Remington's outstanding 870. all of these are quite durable, so a used one is OK.

There are also suitable autos, but little available under $400.

Get the fit right. If it doesn't have a clean sub 4 lb trigger have it tweaked to same. Buy Ammo/Use Up/Repeat until it feels like a body part. About the time a good bird dog would have trouble seeing over the pile of empty hulls you've made, you'll be in a position to tell what addons and modifications you need to up effectiveness and what are just eye candy.

You'll also be $%^&*(ing deadly.

HTH...

1 shotgun comes to mind that I would pick in a heartbeat (If I wasn't saving up for a bolt rifle :o )

- Remington 870 HD model:

a) Comes w/ extended mag tube
b) shorter 18.5" barrel
3) Black (ooooh... tactical ;) )

Then you can put on whatever else necessary. Those comes $299 new so used would even be less! Buy lots and lots of ammo, pick up a sling w/ swivels, maybe even a side saddle if you like.

Personally I'm not a fan of folding stock rears, or pistol gripped shotguns. I still love the way a mean looking shotgun w/ the stock buttstock looks.

Oooh sexy :p

Oh yeah of course the Winchester 1300 defender and the Mossberg 500's comes to mind. Both I'm sure you can get w/ the 18" barrel or something along those lines. Both are good guns but I'm just biased. :)

Closer to the range might be the Benelli Nova. I almost forgot about it. Check that out too, they come in 18.5" barrels and have "recoil reducers" for supposed quicker follow up shots. Dunno if it helps since I've never shot one w/ it.

I bet if you checked all the accounts of folks using a shotgun for HD, you would find that the percentage of 'tactical' shotguns used is about 1%. All the rest would be a plain vanilla shotty, that was pressed into service.

If I was gonna spend bucks on a HD shotgun, I would follow McDave's thoughts, and take the one ya got, and shoot it a LOT. Shoot it until it almost breathes in your hands. That shotgun is now a HD shotgun. The fancy one in someone's safe, that gets shot once a year, can't compare with you and your shotty now.

That being said, my own HD shotgun is an older Wingmaster 12, with 20 inch barrel, rifle sights, 2X mag extension, and a breathed on trigger. I shoot it all the time. Like the old saying goes: "it works for me" :D
