Owen Sparks December 3, 2011, 10:33 AM The other day an acquaintance showed me an old Winchester model ’92 that had been in his family for many years. It was in .32-20 and had a barrel that was only about 14 to 15 inches long.
He said that as far as he knew it was not cut down but came from the factory that way. The owner was well into his sixties and had never shot it or remembered it being shot.
Did Winchester make rifles with barrels that short?
Can this individual get in any legal trouble?
This is an antique that is over 100 years old yet the barrel is shorter than 16 inches.

steveno December 3, 2011, 10:47 AM I have seen a couple of M-92's with short barrels at gunshows. Back in the day they were called trappers. as long as it is factory he should be ok.
Sam1911 December 3, 2011, 10:59 AM Winchester and Marlin did indeed both make short-barreled lever guns way back when.
Those that were factory-made are known by serial number, and are specifically exempt from NFA regulations. But it HAS to have a serial number in the right range listed as exempt.
And they're very valuable.
I'll do a little searching and post some more info...
Sam1911 December 3, 2011, 11:00 AM Here's one valued at $2,500-$4,000.

Sam1911 December 3, 2011, 11:12 AM According to this: http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/firearms-technology.html You can apply to the Firearms Tech Branch to have an original Winchester Trapper determined to be exempt.
Sam1911 December 3, 2011, 11:23 AM Here's the big list... The ATF's C&R listing. Page 33 starts the section on C&Rs determined to be removed from coverage under the NFA: http://www.atf.gov/publications/download/p/atf-p-5300-11/atf-p-5300-11.pdf
