I have a kahr p9 which I'm mostly satisfied with. It's thin light at 16 oz. decent capacity 7+1, and fairly accurate at 15 yds. Only thing is I'm not a big fan of striker fired pistols. Any other suggestions? I'm going to look at whatever 1911 45's and 9mm's I can find.

My goal is to try to keep the size and weight similar. Any suggestions?

I like the Glock-36 a striker fired 45. Any CCO sized 45 1911 would be fine but don't think the weight will get down to where the CCO sized Glock-36 is.

The G-36 is outstanding for the size weight ratio for the 45 acp.

I think the Springfield EMP in 9mm is about as small and light as a 1911 can get, and it is pretty light but at 26 ounces unloaded it still outweighs your Kahr by a lot. You ain't gonna get a 1911 as light as your Kahr, that's for sure.

It's also pretty small, but overall it's slightly bigger (5"x6.5" vs 4.5"x5.8" for the Kahr).

Still a great carry pistol, I love the darned thing.

EMP is a good choice, as is a Smith & Wesson 3913/3914

I'm a bit puzzled how a gun that had proven it's worth to you is suddenly not "right" because it's striker fired. If you were that adamant about that mechanism, why did you buy it in the first place?

For a non striker fire pistol of that size and weight you will have to either go with Ruger or Kel Tec or a light weight revolver. Personally I think the revolver would be the better choice maybe a LCR in .357 that way you can shoot both .38 and .357.

Typical still looking for the perfect CCW answer:

There is no perfect. Every firearm is a series of compromises. That's why there are so many different action types, barrel lengths, calibers, capacities, etc.

And as many opinions.

Not as light as the Kahr but the Springfield EMP(SA/DA)or Colt Defender(SA) would probably be about as small and light as you are going to find in a non-striker fired.

PM me with a normal email address and I will forward a pdf I downloaded from the now defunct Mouseguns website. The pdf shows a variety of Compact/SubCompact offerings from various manufacturers with size/weight specs.

Good luck on your pursuit. I've been looking for something "smaller", hammer fired, DA/SA and the field is very narrow. Go from DA/SA to DAO and the field opens up a bit.

My field has been narrowed down to the out of production S&W CS9 and the still in production CZ75 RAMI. I ruled out the Kahr after dry firing one. For my preference the trigger pull was just too long. Too bad Kahr doesn't offer a DA/SA, hammer fired option on something like the MK9 that would be sweeeeeeeeeet!

Plan2Live's pdf might show measurable differences, but holding my Colt New Agent in .45 up to my buddy's 9mm EMP neither of us could see any real difference in outer dimensions. The weights of both should be easily searchable. Both are great guns, but as has been said- you ain't gonna find a metal gun as light as your Kahr.

FWIW, he and I both sold off Kahr PMs (me a .40 and he a 9mm) and replaced them with our current pieces.

I had a 9mm New Agent for a while. Great gun!

It just depends on what works best for you, I carry my bersa thunder, for me it is great, goes bang everytime and I do trust it 100%. but since it is in .380 you might want more, in the end, try as many as you can and what works for you is what will be best. Not much of an answer but my .02 cents. Good luck and happy shooting!

My first choice would be the EMP 9mm. But, another good one is the Para Ordnance Carry 9, which also avoids the 1911 cocked-and-locked issue some folks have, as well as the striker-fired thing you mention.

A Kimber Ultra CDP II is actually pretty close to a KAHR PM9 size wise. My Kahr has a pearce grip extension so they are close. Weight is quite a bit heavier with the Kimber. I have the correct holster/belt combination and I really don't feel the difference between the two when carrying. My 2¢

I just don't think you can go wrong with the Springfield EMP or there .45 micro-compact. I still get the warm and fuzzies no matter which one take along. For me, they just plain work. That's my 2 cents worth.

I carry an M&P 9c. Regardless of whether you like striker fired or not the M&P compacts and the Glock compacts are the king of CCW to me. Its hard to beat the combination of size, capacity, and capability of the G26. I prefer the M&P 9c for how it fits my hand though.

Smith and Wesson's 438 or 638 might fit your bill as well. If you are okay with DAO then the Sig P290 might be what you are looking for. I have had good success with my Keltecs also and the PF9 is a great lazy carry pistol. Good luck in your hunt. :-)

Are you a fan of revolvers? Nothing to jam. The original Colt Agent, weighed 14 ounces and was available only in .38 special, with a 2-inch barrel and blued finish. Very nice and so light you will carry every day. At 14 ounces and 6 rounds of 38 special, what else would you like in a CCW? With a couple of speed loaders in tow, you've got all you'll ever need.

If you must have an auto, I sometimes carry a Springfield Micro in 45 ACP but, I know I'm wearing it from the weight tugging on my hip.

Not as light as the Kahr but the Springfield EMP(SA/DA)or Colt Defender(SA)
The EMP is not an SA/DA. It is an SA 1911.

I have owned two EMPs. The second was a factory replacement for the first. It had nearly as many problems as the first. Each went back to the factory twice. Both are long gone. IME, great in concept, not so much in execution.

At the same time I owned a 3" Kimber Ultra Carry that fires the .45acp round, weighs the same (24 oz.), is only marginally larger (fits the same holster) and has worked perfectly from the word "go". Made the choice pretty easy for me.

In fairness, this was in 2007, and I am sure Springfield has worked those problems out by now. My first impression of the EMP was that it is a jewel. I stand by that assesssment, but much like a diamond, you are buying it for it's aesthetic/perceived value...and I got two flawed ones.

I agree. I just got a 36 and for me its perfect. 6+1 of 45 acp in a package so light and small that i actually can forget that im carrying it...even when seated in my truck!

I prefer the compact Kimber Raptor for in close work. Once a guy who owned the range asked me to try one that someone said they couldnt hit area of barn with. I shot three connecting holes at 15 yds with it then the owner wouldnt sell it to me.

Are you a fan of revolvers? Nothing to jam.

They jam. Powder builds up under extraction star, cases expand and bind in cylinder, primers back put, residue builds up in cylinder keeping ammo from going all the way in. This is just a quick list.

Don't get me wrong, I carry , compete, and hunt with revolvers.

If you shoot enough rounds through a gun you will eventually experience a malfunction. I'm not suggesting torture testing, just regular usage.

I don't think a perfect ccw gun exists.

S&W j-frame, Colt Government 380, Diamondback 380, Glock 27, and Springfield 1911 full-size are my regular carry guns.

Conditions such as weather, location (farm or city), and appropriate attire for the activity all play into the final decision.

the closest I know of is the alloy framed S&W 39 variants. Having said that my often IWB carry is a TP-9.

S&W 908s is the modern econo version of the 3913, very well worth looking at for consideration.
