I am going to get a new Benelli M2 tomorrow for duck hunting. I am torn between the factory Max4 camo and plain black. I like the camo. However, I have heard that it tends to chip away with time.

I take very good care of my guns. What do you think?

Camo pattern will wear off physically and socially. Go with the black. It's easier to resell and more durable. Also not necessary for waterfowl as long as you don't wave it around in the air. If you turkey hunt, you can get camo duct tape for that season. Camo patterns are expensive and they go out of style in about 5 years. Just go look at a used gun rack at a sporting goods store and you will see Berettas, Benellis, Brownings, and Winchesters sitting there with old camo patterns that are preventing them from flying off the shelf.

they come out with new camo patterns every year or two, and the "old" ones seem to go out of style. Black is never out of style.

Get black...and a roll of the latest, up to datest, camo of the season tape. All will be good.

Seriously, that is an interesting point about new camo patterns. I never thought about the possible resale impact of an old camo pattern, but then again I have no plans on selling my one camo shotgun (the ducks and turkeys don't care) and I still hunt in Realtree Xtra Brown.

Get camo. Black guns show up easy in an IR scope...if you care. I have a bunch of Benellis with camo...$200 more, but I prefer it on my turkey gun, and my deer gun. My goose gun is black, cause I got a deal on it, and the geese don't see me in the blind. But, I was thinking of wrapping some ACU cloth tape around it. Otherwise I would have gotten Max4HD camo.

Keep in mind a lot of blinds are black on the inside now, so a black gun is better there. Overall, I go camo for hunting shotguns, black for defense, just because it isn't offered. Turkey and deer hunting you are trying to break up lines, so it makes sense. Did they need camo in 1930 to hunt deer and turkey? no. They did it in overalls and a wood stock shotgun. People are more comfortable around camo and wood stock guns then Black. Black is scary. Do you want the gun to intimidate....go black...

Gotta have a wood stock over and under on the skeet range, cause they are a snooty bunch. But really I take them all to the skeet range and practice with them. You should too, black, blue, or camo. Make sure the flashlight doesn't fall off when you shoot the weapon. Screw the snoots...

Example: Just because SWAT uses all Black clothing and gear, doesn't mean it is better. What kind of camo would you wear if the SHTF? All Black, Military...no... Hunter camo fits in everywhere now. People are use to seeing it...just another red neck, regular guy... and it is usually of better quality for blending in to your particular area... With Scent lock and waterproofing, quiet cloth, your hunting camo clothes are far superior to the army's ACU. True you don't have IR coating...but not a big deal.

Does a Sniper have a black gun? No, he wraps it and paints it. Why? So people can't see it as easily and surfaces won't reflect light. So, if you like it in Camo, get it in camo. If you like it in black, get it in black. Sooner or later you will have too many weapons anyway, and you will have to by a second safe. And hey, if for no other reason but you think it looks cool in camo, get camo... Its your money, and nobody is going to care but you.

I have a really nice Beretta sitting on my used gun rack at work for really cheap, but it has a horrible camo pattern on it so it's been sitting there for a long time, and the previous owner got a horrible price for it.
If you're looking for a gun for duck hunting, save yourself the $200 and get a black gun, because you're going to be in the blind, and make yourself more money in the future when you decide it's time to sell it.
Camo duct tape and goof off will take care of any hunting situations in which you need camo (turkeys)

Good advise. I just bought the black one. I am meticulous about cleaning my gun after each hunt. So, I do not think I need the camo for protection. My opinion is that minimizing movement and a good blind are more important than gun color for waterfowl.

When I said that camo patterns go "out of style" I thought I was clear, but please let me clarify. I meant in terms of resale value, and interest from possible buyers. The ducks dont care what color your gun is. there are dark/black shotgun looking objects in nature, (tree branches).

Sorry for any confusion.
