I know that 550 cord can be used to make lanyards, zipperpulls, tactical slings, wrapped around forearms (AR-15's), and used as handles on knives. Where can I find information on other uses and instructions on how to make the above and how to braid? On a semi related note (in my mind) where can one buy dog tag chain-just the chain?

The folsom site is excellent for learning. But, if you want a good reference for everything rope-related, get a copy of The Ashley Book of Knots. This is the definitive text on the ancient art. The best way to learn the ropes.

OK. I figured out the 3 strand braid. How do I tie off the braid to that I can start the lanyard?

Another fine use for 550 cord: Field expeidient holster. As my unit's armorer, I often had to carry several handguns on me. (When we went to the field, the officers did not want to carry them, just dead weight to them, as no blanks were available. Carrying them on me was the only way to secure them.) I used 550 cord to make the holsters as I needed them. You can loosen the middle knots to adjust for individual guns, and when not holding a gun , can be tucked in the waist band, and do not draw unwanted "attention". They are worn iwb, are cheap, easy, and if there's a downside, reholstering is a pain. I carried, M1911A1's, M10 .38's and M9 9mm's in these in service, and a Python 2 1/2" , a CZ24 .380, and an S&W Model 19 after I got out.
OT, I made my own blanks for the .38's with old brass and some primers. Useta make 'em jump when I'd point a .38 their way, and it went boom instead of click!:what:
