What is it worth?

There's a local pawn shop that has a couple of S&W revolvers that are of interest to me. They look like model 10s. They are both the old 5 screw models. One is fairly clean and has pretty decent lockup. The other is missing more of it's finish, and I couldn't do the check out. Both priced at around $200, I think that I could get them for around $100 each.
Inside the cranes are 4 digit serial numbers. (14xx and 20xx) I couldn't see the serial on the butt of either. These must be M&Ps
Should I go for them or let them keep gathering dust?

The numbers under the crane are assembly numbers, not model numbers. I think those guns are .38 Special Military and Police models, pre-1958, meaning they were made before S&W started using model numbers on revolvers.
The M&P's of that era are very fine guns, and most opinion is that in good condition, they are much better than anything being made today. They were not made for +P ammo and most definitely +P+ should never be used in them.
They sound like police trade-ins which means they have been carried much, shot little. Frankly, if you can get them for $100 each, I would suggest buying both without even thinking about it.

If they both are 5-screw models, then chances are they both have the half-moon front sights.
I'd be seriously inclined to get both of them, the better one to stand on its own, the other one as a project gun.

Thanks all. Unfortunately I'm out of town bound in the morning. I'll check back next Tuesday and see of they're still there.

And if you're wanting them for shooters as opposed to for collectables, you can have one parkerized for next to nothing or try your hand at bluing one yourself.

Grab'em both. Decide later what gets done to which. Good guns! Quantrill
