How much do these types of shotguns cost? I have never owned a shotgun.

I am interested in a Double barrel 12 gauge shotgun preferably with the hammers on the outside exposed, but it's not a deal breaker. Also in shooting condition with new production factory ammunition

My main question I guess is how much would one of these cost me?

That is an open-ended question.

There are cheap guns whose quality is suspect for several hundred dollars and then there are top-tier guns where a few more zeros would need to be added to the figure

What's your budget?

You can find a perfectly serviceable older american made double from the turn of the century for $300-$500 depending on condition. The external hammer models will be much less common, and probably not in as nice of shape.

Keep away from anything with damascus steel barrels, or anything with a chamber shorter than 2 3/4ths inch (if you want to keep to modern ammo that is). Also pay attention to the lockup where the breechface meets the ends of the chambers. Any slop here is a very bad thing.

Really I just want a cheap , shoot-able shotgun that I wouldn't care to chop the barrels down and finish on it doesn't matter, Kinda want it to look old but function good still.

the question is I guess, if i were to throw 200 or less would I be able to find what I am looking for?

I have always wanted a cowboy 12 ga. coach gun w/hammers. Thought it would look good on the wall and fun to go shoot with. GOT ONE for around 250 about a year ago and it looked cool on the wall, but after taking it out for the first time, and shooting 2 1/2 #8 shot thru it about 15 times. My son noticed that the cheap barrel had developed a bulge in it, right near the end.
Now i have a useless piece of junk to hang on the wall and look at. This does not surprise me at all though. everything else i have that was made in China has been worthless garbage also, and I mean all. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND BUY A REPUTABLE NAME BRAND:cuss::confused::neener:

there was a "Coach Gun" i believe imported by Stoeger a few years ago that was only a couple of hundred. There are alot of older side by side shotguns that are very valuable, so before you customize an older one, please post brand and model on here. Some SxS nut might offer you a lot more than you paid. and if it has Parker on the side PM me before you let anyone else know about it.

........Baikal hammer coachgun. That ran me around $425 after taxes about 3-4 years ago. EAA is importing them again. Sometimes a Rossi Overland appears on GunBroker.

Browning doesn't make them any more but they used to make a SxS called the BSS. I'm guessing they quit making them because more people were buying the various Citori models than the BSS.

I just bought an old Wards Hercules 16ga side by side for the equivalent of about $150 (M91/30 + cash). The finish is all but gone, but its got a tight lock up and it throws shot where you point it. You might have a hard time finding a 12 gauge for around $200, but the deals are out there if you know where to look.

For "$200 or less" you might want to visit pawn shops and see if they are having a sale on stuff that's been sitting a long time. Not a lot of demand for SXS anymore as folks have gravitated towards semi-auto or pump with synthetic everything (ack). The cheap imports are just that cheap and fit/finish aren't anything to write home about. All this offered IMHO and worth what you paid for it :)

Actually, thanks to CASS, and a resurgence in older Parkers, LC's, etrc., many are returning to the SxS - the grace, nostalgia, etc. for a day in the field makes it worthwhile - personally, I like a nice lithe 20 with double triggers and a splinter forearm, especially if it is an AyA or Arrietta

I recently bought the hammerless Baikal coach with OC's. I was under $400 OTD for a new one.

I bought it because I always wanted one... oh yeah, and it can serve a purpose too. Ive never owned a shot gun either.

OP, you sound like you're in the same boat I was. What I found was that I couldnt find a $200 coach gun - pumps all day long - not any SxS that didnt look like it got ran over by a truck in its best picture.

I found that I could get the new Baikal for the price of a used Stoeger and it seems the Baikal is at least a durable as the Stoeger from what I read and those that I asked/PM'd.

It is not a beautiful gun. However, the finish on the barrels and the wood are fine. I really cant complain; no noticable blems.

Its not a fine gun either. However it works fine. I havent shot it much but it works and it feels solid.

I was told its built like a tractor and feels like it too, but not necessariily in a bad way. I was fine with that.

I'd say its more refined than a tractor.... more like a 1ton mid-90s truck :uhoh:

I like it. :D

EMF sells an exposed hammer model. It's also made in China but much higher quality than the one sold by Century which was previously mentioned.
