Next Firearm

I'm looking for a few logic-based opinions to help walk me to a decision I need to make next month.

Some of you may recall I've been talking about buying my only handgun next month, in January, which I planned to use as an EDC. Then the other day, I began looking more seriously at options for a hunting rifle, when a friend of mine proposed a series of hunts in 2012, most of which would take place in the Fall (coyote hunts would be the main exception, which could be at any point during the year).

Here's my problem: I need to decide which firearm to buy first, and we'll assume my second firearm purchase of 2012 will take place in August, which is the most likely scenario. There is a small chance of getting three firearms in January (one is going to be my wife's EDC regardless of what I choose for myself), but I don't want to count on that. Two is a sure thing - one for me, one for my wife.

My only currently-owned firearm is a 12 gauge shotgun for HD.

If I get the handgun, I won't be able to carry it often, because I'm a full-time college student, and I also work 40 hours a week at my school. Combined, school and work account for a huge amount of my time. However, getting it would mean I have a backup HD weapon, and of course I'd carry when not at school or work. The school/work thing isn't likely to change for another year or so, possibly two.

If I get the rifle, I know I'll have it available for any early-2012 hunts we do. If I make the rifle my second purchase, I may have to pass on some hunts, which would suck. I also enjoy shooting rifles at the range more than handguns, but the ammo is a good bit more expensive, which may very well end up being the limiting factor for how much shooting I do. Reloading isn't an option at this point, unfortunately.

Which firearm would you buy in January if you were in my shoes?

Edit:

I meant to make this a poll with two options - either Buy the handgun first, and put the rifle off until August, or Buy the rifle first, and put the handgun off until August. Sorry about that.

Get the handgun in January. You can hunt with a 12ga.

I don't see a clear choice.

Your opportunities to carry concealed are limited due to being on campus so much. On the other hand you won't need the rifle until next fall. Sounds like a toss up.

How much is your budget. You're a working college student so I'm assuming funds will be tight. Money may determine your next purchase depending on the type of rifle and handgun.

I guess $750. That's what my financial advisor agreed to.

Thought was that I may pick up a Sig P220 or P229 as the pistol, which would be right under $750. I wasn't planning on spending more than $650 on the rifle (not including scope).

I was never a fan a Sig but that's the beauty of the hobby. One person's junk is another person's treasure. Your handgun possibilities are pretty open at that price range. My advice is to go to a range, if possible, and rent the gun of choice to test drive it first. I've purchased guns without driving them first and regretted the purchase.

Oh by the way, I'd go handgun first as I'm a handgun person more than a rifle person.

Absolutely. Happy to say I was able to find a range that rents both the P220 and P229, as well as every other handgun in my list of potentials. That range trip is planned for the first week in January.

Since you live in AZ I would think a smaller/lighter/thinner carry pistol like a PF9, PM9, PPS, etc would work well for you.

The SIG P239 and Glock 27 are the two smallest firearms I'm considering. However, there is a potential move to Alaska in the works, depending whether or not I'm selected for a job I applied for. If that works out, we're moving in July, and concealing even a large-frame handgun won't be a problem most of the year.

Sounds like a plan. I used to carry my PF9 mainly in TX since it was hot and I dressed in shorts/t shirt outside of work but now that I'm in WA and wear a jacket I find myself grabbing the Hi Power most of the time.
