This may be a dumb question, but just want to make sure its normal...Is it normal for the bolt operation to be real smooth when no mag is in, but when one is inserted the action gets a tad rougher. For example, like the bolt gets caught 3/4 back and then of course all the way back. Is it normal for it to get caught 3/4 way back with mag in?

An empty magazine? that would be your bolt catch stopping the carrier and then the bolt. There is a tab on the rear of the magazine follower that you can see when you remove the magazine from the rifle. This activates your bolt catch.

I don't notice what you're describing. Did you assemble the rifle or by it complete?

Sounds like perfectly normal friction the carrier is experiencing on rounds in the mag or the mag lips and follower itself. How does it function when you fire it? If the rifle works the way it is supposed to it sounds good to me.

Its the bolt catch working as it should as mentioned above. It catches the carrier 3/4 of the way back and the bolt itself all the way back.

When you insert a magazine, either the follower or the rounds in the mag rub on the bottom of the carrier. So if you're asking if things feel "rougher" when you insert something to drag on the action, yes.
