Wow. I'm looking at the position of the hammer on the frame. I guess that to keep the hammer tang in reach of the thumb it had to be lowered relative to the top of this huge frame.

I want to know when were are going to see Ruger come out with the UltimateRedHawk chambered for the 50S&WMagnum. :D
You know, the overengineered revolver that is capable of handling twice the pressure that a S&W revolver can.

Yeah, except the rollmark on the barrel would read:
.500 Magnum

Given the opportunity I'll definitely shoot one just to try it. I will still use my BFR in 45/70 for hunting and fun. It is nice to have rifles and handguns in the same caliber. Be nice to see the specs on the rounds. I'll bet the thing snaps like a 454. It sure won't have a single action roll to it.

Tamara, that may be because the original name of the Model 29 was "44 Magnum." The 629 is just a stainless steel version of the 44 Magnum, IIRC.
Similarly, the Model 27 is named "357 S&W Magnum." So, imho, if you say you have a S&W 357 Magnum, it can be reasonably construed to be that you are saying you have a Model 27.

500swmag,
If sales are as strong as the interest being generated, it looks like you have a real winner here.
Can you give some insight on how this project came to be and maybe what was the motivating factory in building such a beast and who exactly is the target audience.

Yes, I can believe it Tamara, and Ruger follows suit.;) However, ammo-makers are not competitor's in the handgun arena. Witness Ruger's use of ".40 Auto" on their pistol barrels in that caliber. It's been around long enough that one need not hear the the letters 'ACP' after the .45 to know what the caliber of discussion is. However, the forty was born as .40 Smith and Wesson, and the zippy little magnum auto cartridge is .357Sig.

The design criteria was simple... make it big, make it bad... The powers that be wanted something bad *** that would top todays hottest standard production revolver (ie 454 Casull) and they wanted it in 50 cal. Thus after someones &*% dream the 500 S&W magnum idea was born. Pressure was to remaain relatively low (40ish ksi) compared to 454 casull and we were to hit the 2200 ft-lbs energy mark. The longer the cartridge the better for meeting these criteria, so case length is 1.6". there is currently 4 loading that we have tested, 275gr solid copper bullet, 325gr sp 400 gr sp and a 440gr HC the 400 and 440 develop over 2500 ft-lbs of energy!!!!! go to CorBon to see all specs for loadings. http://www.corbon.com/500s&W.htm
As for the gun
72ish oz (unloaded) something like 80oz loaded
8.75"ish barrel w/compensator
5 shot 500 S&W Mag
thumb latch cylinder release (standard Smith style)
modified ball detent yoke lock up (vlier plunger in frame that locks into yoke, standard locking bolt removed)
K frame sized grip (allows for grip with wrap around syle grips to be used (Hogue) or any standard K grip to be used on gun)
Thats the major jist of it.

500swmag, job well done on your design! I do have a few questions for you:
How short can the barrel be shortened to until it reaches the extractor rod?
Did you fire the 500 Linebaugh short or Long before designing it?
Does the recoil feel more like a push or is there a slight roll?
Have you fired it without the comp?

DE50,
"...How short can the barrel be shortened to until it reaches the extractor rod? "
I would say to be safe 3.5", but I'm sure someone will attempt shorter
"...Did you fire the 500 Linebaugh short or Long before designing it?" I have not fired 500 Linebaugh, only 454 Casull and 480 Ruger.
"...Does the recoil feel more like a push or is there a slight roll?"
hows this, it feels like a push with a roll... is that a on the fence answer or what.
"...Have you fired it without the comp?" yes, and surprisingly enough it has quit an effect on muzzle flip and recoil. And not just the added weight on the end of the barrel effect. The comp also does not reduce the effective barrel length as with many comps. it is an attachment.

Thanks BC for the information.
Would it be possible see what the top of the Comp looks like?
Did you design the comp?
Will the street price be under $900.00?
Thanks again!

yes I designed the comp, one of the other engineers here, Rich Mikuta, designed the barrel attachment system (Originally for Airlites), as well as the comp attachment. Both the comp design and attachment method are patent pending, so I can't show more detail, you know legalities... blah, blah, blah

Haven't purchased anything that goes bang for 18 months or so.

Dang it. Thought I had the purchase impulse under control too.

So, is it legal in CA?
50 cal Desert Eagles aren't sold here anymore, not that I ever wanted one, anyway. A 400 grain bullet at 1700 fps is pushing .45-70 power levels.
Ummm...has anyone yet though to shoot one in the field, while hunting? i.e., with no earplugs?
The last time I shot a full house .44 mag in the field, my ears were ringing for two days. Recoil, I can live with, but I'd rather not need hearing aids, thanks.

I have had a couple of chances to shoot the .500. The first time was in December. At that time, I shot it without the compensator.
Last week, I shot it again with the compensator.
BIG difference.
With the comp, and the lightest of three loads, not a problem. With the more powerful loads, you really feel it.
With the 440-grain load, even with the comp, it's a handful, and I'm sure I'd say it was fun.
When you put it next to a 629, the .44 Mag looks like a pocket gun!
Really an incredible hunting handgun.

Correction!
>>With the 440-grain load, even with the comp, it's a handful, and I'm sure I'd say it was fun.<<
Should have been "I'm NOT sure I'd say it was fun."
Oh, without the comp, there was a lot of torque, too. Really twisted my shooting hand right out of the support hand. With the comp, I did not notice the torque.
We shot water jugs (vaporized) and steel plates. The steel plates went down FAST. I wanted to shoot blocks of ice, but we couldn't find any.

"I'm NOT sure I'd say it was fun."
That will really pique a lot of folks interest on this forum. The more punishing, the more they want it. I think there is a pyscho-sexual term for this type of condition.

More food for thought.
The X-Frame S&W is so big, the cylinder will handle a .223 rifle cartridge.
Or 8 rounds of .44 magnum.
Or 10 rounds of .357 Magnum.
Or a new .45 Super magnum cartridge? To shoot a "lighter" load, you could fire the .454 Casull. For the pipsqueak load, you could fire .45 Colt in it. <grin>
It's a platform. Of course, I'd love to see them chamber it for 22 rounds of .22 Magnum! They won't, because as soon as they did, some government agency would pass a law against high capacity cylinders.
But a custom gunsmith could sure have fun with it!

So, how about an X-frame Mountain Gun?
Tapered 4" barrel, no comp, Bear Medicine! Bring a brace.
Yeah, I know it's crazy, but I am well-known to think outside the boxc...
