The Japanese used to do essentially the same thing in WWII. They'd give their children small ceramic grenades and have them run to the American positions to kill a few GI's.

They are still finding these in caches today.

I worked with a man who served in Korea, he said that when Korean kids came up begging for chocolate they'd have to warn them off at gunpoint for fear they were doing the same thing. Also the NK's would round up women/children and herd them ahead of themselves across minefields when assaulting a perimeter.

The North Korean Communists were brutal to be sure. They would force crowds of Korean refugees fleeing southward to accompany them when approaching American and ROK units, then fire from the midst of the crowd. A good example is the engagement at No Gun Ri.

I used to come across small American military cemetaries in the ROK when I worked there, a lot of them would have plaques explaining how the GIs were killed after being captured.
