22 mag, any ideas?

January 3, 2012, 08:13 PM
Mapping out some purchases for the year and one, if funds are available, I would like to be a 22 mag rifle. The savage model 93 is one on the radar. budget would be $500. But less is better, as leaves room for a scope. Semi auto would be cool but given the budget I think bolt action will be my action of choice. I really dislike tube mags for rim fire guns, I hate loading them. So mag fed is what I am looking for. Usage is hunting fox and coyotes. I am limited to rimfire rifles in my area, and would like a bit more punch than 22lr.

I bought one of the 93s (Black synthetic stock, heavy barrel, matte black finish) about 2 years ago. I am pleased beyond words with it. That Accu-Trigger is amazing. Watch the sale fliers from the big sporting goods chains. A couple of times a year one or more of them will have a package deal on rifle and scope and usually beat MSRP on the the rifle alone by a mile. Usually it is for the .22 LR or .17 HMR version, but the last one I noticed was for the Mag.

I was also surprised by the Fiocchi .22 mag ammo. I bought a brick of it on sale at Cabelas thinking it would be OK practice ammo, but it is very consistent and beat the Wal-Mart price of the cheapest Winchester stuff by a buck a box.

Awesome, very good to hear. I know savage has a good rep but in the mid to low 200 range I thought the 93 maybe to good to be true.

Here is my 93... I love it.

I lost zero (my fault). Went back to the range. Here are the first five shots... 50 yards.

^^^ BTW, the fifth shot was me making sure I was on the paper. I was 50 yards away and I couldn't tell if they were all the same hole. They were.

I have a Savage 93 and the trigger is just... it's hard to describe how good it is. I would definately reccomend it.

I was looking at some online, can't remember now, but a bolt action .22mag starts at about $280(dealer prices).

I will second or third the Savage 93. Mine is a 93FVSS, black plastic stock with bull barrel. I buy ammo bulk from Cheaper Than Dirt for approz $70-75 per 500 and it shoots it well. I have adjusted the trigger to a very light clean break and it is a great rifle.

+1 on the Savage 93 but also look at the CZ 452 line.
I've got the deluxe model in .22mag.

Savage !

The CZ looks nice. But since theres such rave reviews for the 93 I'm thinking thats the route I'm gonna go. Looks like the CZ is 200 or so more than the savage. Is it 200 dollars more rifle? I will see if I can handle a cz though. It looks like gander mtn carries the CZ and probably the 93 also so I may be able to check them out side b side. The Camo 93 package looks pretty sweet wish I could get the camo 22 mag with out the scope.

I'm a little leary of scopes that come on rifles from dicks or gander mtn.

Make sure to check out JettGuns.com... I got it for a great price. I think Gander was a lot more.

January 4, 2012, 09:13 AM
i'll check out jettguns right now shipping and transfer usually adds up to at least FIFTY DOWER BILLS though.

January 4, 2012, 11:11 AM
Shipping should be free.

jetguns had them but avg. going prices, Buds had a couple for under 200 dollars, 179with free shipping. That was the no frills Base model though. I'm thinking down the road I would wish I spent a little extra and bought one of the prettier models. I think theres a couple guns shows coming up and am gonna check out the LGS and the big box gun shops this week end. At least I got a good idea of what they cost. Either way I am happy to find a quality rifle well with in budget!

Got a cheap $150 Marlin 22 mag. Put a 3x9 on top, and found out it likes 40 gr solid tip winchester shells . It's a tack driver. Iv'e taken woodchucks out to 175 paces with it, and more than a few turkeys. Leaves em dead as a doornail. One of my favorite rifles to hunt with.

Have Henry lever-action and love it. Smooth action and relatively accurate. The company stated their guns should have 2 MOA or less.

Lobo, PM me what models you are looking for. I'll see if I can find something for you.

I do not do "new and fangled" I am wood-n-blue...
I mean everything we need, we had by 1935, unless one "needs" a .44 mag, then rap it up to 1955.

That said, I paid attention to Lee and Larry as I trust these folks.
I have Serious property duty needs. Serious. So the 93R17 in .17HMR has already proven itself, in the short time I have had it. Granted I am on near 90 acres, still I do have neighbors "over that-a-way" and "over-yonder-a-bit".

Oh I have nothing against .22 long rifle, nor .22 Magnum, and trust me, my history with dealing with pests, varmints, included these chamberings, just for MY needs, in MY environment, Today ...well as I shared with Lee Lapin:
We darn sure could have used a .17 HMR Forty years ago...

Two ground-hawgs, two crows, three ground-hawgs, one coyote, five racoons...still countin'...

Sending best,

Love me some Savage 93 in 22 magnum. It just keeps going and going like that little drum playing rabbit.

my gradad bought me a model 93 sometime around 1994 i think? its been a great little gun i put a 2-7 bushnell banner scope on it a long time ago.i can put 3 rounds of cci ammo inside an inch at 70yrds wich is about as far as i care to shoot at critters with a 22mag. shot god knows how many woodcucks with it over the years. It spends most of the summer in the scabord on the fender of the tractor when i am putting up haying or mowing pastures.

Marlin is part of freedom group so... not sure what that means. This weekend I got some time set aside to go lurking around some gun shops see what I can find.
