I hav ordered a Ruger 10/22 with the threaded barrel with the intention of adding a suppressor when I can afford the can and stamp. I had heard reference to buying a larger caliber can thereby having the ability use it on more than one weapon. Would a .40 cal can work on a .22 or should I go with a 9mm. Also I understand that the .22 is a round that perhaps leaves more residue and therefore the can should be able to be disassembled. Can someone clear up these questions.

You can use a pistol can on a rim fire and you are correct you are better off getting a user serviceable can for keeping lead build up and carbon cleaned out. Typically the closer to the bullet flight path the baffles or mono core is the more efficient the suppressor is if bigger was always better all suppressors would be a 2 inch tube with a 1.75 inch hole.

I know starting out it seems really tempting to get a "one size fits all" can but you are going to spend at least 2 times as much on a pistol can that has the ability to swap boosters as you would on one good .22 can that is serviceable.

If you shoot a .22 through a 9mm can there will be around .133 +/- around your bullet, and with a .40 there will be around .177 +/-. You will also get some of your sound reduction back because of the added length of a pistol can versus a 5 inch .22 can, which is pretty much the norm right now.

The added volume of a larger caliber can will partially make up for the too large bore. I use a take-apart homemade 9mm silencer on my Browning Hi-power, 1895 Nagant revolver, and various 22lr firearms.

Keep in mind that using the filthy 22lr round in a silencer that is sealed and intended for use with centerfire jacketed ammo will foul it with hard to remove gunk in a few thousands rounds and degrade its performance.
