.300 BLK barrel in M16A1 clone

I was putting together a theoretical AR build for a possible AR build party and since I'm not super conversant with AR patterns, I wanted to make sure my build would work before buying parts (Well more hopelessly looking for an M16A1 parts kit before giving in and buying repro parts).
From looking at various .300 barrels, it looks like all of them use carbine or pistol gas port placements, is this correct? (this probably isn't proper terming but like I said. . .)
If this is not true, will I be able to find a .300 blk barrel with the right contours that can be used in an M16A1 clone or will I have to modify the build? Or will the contours not even matter?
If needed, can a lopro gas block be hidden under the triangle handguards easily?

You would need a carbine-length gas system. You could get this with a low profile gas block under the handguards but the barrel would need to be contoured to accept that along with another FSB at the normal M16 position. This is not likely to happen without a manufacturer or really good custom gunsmith doing the barrel.

In short, this idea is possible but fairly difficult and likely expensive unless you have advanced gunsmithing skills and a lathe.

You could, however, do an M4 or XM177/CAR-15 clone with a lot less effort, if that's an interest.

That is actually very awesome and a variant I had never really known about before until now. Thanks. I dropped an email to Noveske to ask about the barrel diameter of their AAC barrels so I can start making notes on the build.

So I found out that the barrel i want to use is 0.725" in diameter. Is shimming a .750" front sight post with .0125"/0.3mm piece of metal or boring out a .625" front sight a better choice? The shimming seems like a better idea to me since the uniformity will be consistent whereas I'll not know if the boring is flawless until it's on the barrel.
edit: the front sight base is not going to be used as the gas block, the gas block is lopro under the handguards.

Boring out an FSB to .725" would be far better if that is an option (as in, you can get it done by someone who can do it precisely). Then you will have only one piece that can be mounted more securely than a shimmed oversize FSB. If this is a garage project for a non-machinist then I suppose the shimming might go easier.

I am looking for the images on the net, but it has been done. Its basically an
M-16A1 Dissipator, running carbine gas,you can trim a A2 FSB with a dremel, to fit underneath the triangle handguards. I would think a standard M4 profile barrel in carbine gas would be the ticket.

Given the plethora of .750 low profile gas blocks on the market it is definitely possible.

Z-michigan: I'll contact a local gunsmith everyone I know likes to see if he has time to do it but the shimmed FSB will be just the front sight, the gas system will be a pistol length lo-pro under the handguards (ten inch (http://noveskerifleworks.com/cgi-bin/imcart/display.cgi?item_id=b-10-300&cat=168&page=1&search=&since=&status=&title=) barrel built as a pistol until SBR paperwork done).

Dprice3844444: I'm trying to build a rechambered clone, the S&W is too long and not an A1 receiver, while i could throw on one of those handle/sight components for an A3, I'd prefer not.

Big_Bad_Bob: I googled the image and the setup looks cool but I didn't put enough info since I decided to go with an xm177 clone. I know I'll have to order a pistol buffer system and the shorter triangle handguards and the barrel, gas tube, and the FCG will be put aside/sold if i can get a parts kit (http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/used-us-military-colt-m16a1-parts-kit.aspx?a=593346) like this (which I probably can't find so I'm making the budget with ordering Nodak NDS-604 "Retro" upper and NDS-601 lower receivers), I just hoped the front sight from it could be used as just a sight while shimmed in place or replaced/bored out with a newer one if that one isn't the right size.

Adding link to my gDocs budget with links to the various items I've temporarily decided on: link (https://docs.google.com/document/d/14dGu91nY4LaHLB6YfuH1NwB5Wm1HEEMKMAeAyWV5OhI/edit)

edit: if a mod reads this, could they change title to xm177 clone please?

but the versatility that is offered by .300 BLK (especially when you throw a silencer into the mix) makes it the ideal self defense caliber for AR-15 rifles.

This keeps coming up over and over with .300 BLK the suppression issue.

I looked at the Noveske but most are sold out. Guess I need to revisit the .300 BLK but once you get into the higher end stuff you are approaching the price of a LaRue in 7.62 and its a light 7.62 at $2495. I guess the $700 would cover some nice optics. ;)

If money is not an issue I'm sure you could get a made to order barrel.

Who has 300BLK in stock?

I built this:

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=631800

Used M4 parts. The barrel is from Defense Industries.

From Bravo Company USA I got a M4 Semi Auto Bolt Carrier Group, charging handle, muzzle break, carbine length gas tube, Yankee Hill hand guard and trim ring and ordered a firebird adjustable gas block.

Unless you get a barrel with a gas port drilled out to about .110 you will have cycle issues.

Cost about $800 not including the tools you need to buy.

Here is a link to The Truth About Guns: Ask Foghorn. I really like the set-up that he has for a 300 BLK build at the end of the article. The components are listed below. Any thoughts here?

http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2011/12/foghorn/ask-foghorn-best-self-defense-ar-15/

Advanced Armament Complete 16″ .300 AAC Blackout Upper Receiver ($1080)
Primary Arms Red Dot and Base ($118)
Magoul MBUS Rear Sight ($58)
Aero Precision Stripped Lower with Parts Kit ($135)
Magpul MOE+ Grip ($23)
Timney Trigger ($210)
Magpul ASAP ($30)
DPMS Milspec buffer tube ($36)
Bravo Company Spring and Buffer ($16)
Magoul MOE Stock ($60)

Total build: $1,766 + tax + shipping.
his build is awesome but the whole point of this build is to do it relatively cheaply and have a somewhat unique semi-retro build for an ar-15 build party/class a friend is setting up that will eventually get SBR'ed and suppressed. And maybe engraved with my favorite Spanish Civil War/Woody Guthrie quote.

I'm building a 300 BLK upper to replace my CMMG 300 BLK upper. My price is similar to what they are doing. If you like everything about that upper, then great. If you would consider changing anything, build your own.

I purchased my barrel from Wilson Combat.
