Remember those days long gone when kids took their rifles to school, and stayed late - to compete against other kids in the Junior Smallbore rimfire matches, held in the 50ft rifle range set up in the basement locker rooms? My dad reminded both myself and my wife when he reintroduced me to an old friend last Christmas. See below.

It was my faithful Remington 521T, he'd held on to it all those years since I left home at 14. It even felt like a comfortable pair of old shoes when he handed it back to me. I'm taking my wife out when the weather clears up to get her acquainted with the gun that started my competition rifle shooting history.

Ahhh yes. Mine was an Anchutz .22LR, on the high school rifle team. Great experience.

Came back from college one weekend and found pops had sold it. :cuss:

Indeed! Another 12 year old and myself took the public bus (PTC) and trolley to a bowling alley in Phila. where there was a 50ft. range underneath the alleys. No one ever said a word about two pre-teenagers getting on the bus unaccompanied with rifles in a case and a fishing tackle box with ammo and a cleaning rod. I shudder to think what would happen nowadays. This was circa 1956. How wonderful to rediscover your old rifle, I wish I had mine. Quantrill

Not a school club but: Davey Crockett Junior Rifle Club at Ft. Myer VA with a Winchester Model 75 from 1962 to 1964. My first true competitions were the monthly winter matches in the basement of the NRA HQ.

Mine was a model 75 too. We walked to the ROTC range at the University of Wyoming. Nobody thought a thing of a bunch of 13 year old kids with rifles back in those days.
