I have 2 #28 model S&W-357's that have the sharp target hammers in them.
when I do any amount of single action shooting,I get a bloodey thumb from the sharp notching.
is there any way that I can change the top of the hammer? do not want to grind off anything. put on a pad of some thing or other? change out hammer to non target, but that cost big money and not sure of how to do that.

thank you for your time

New hammers would be a factory fit item and probably would not solve the problem. A smith could file/mill/stone the sharp chckering or you could do it yourself, but it would remove the finish and negatively effect the resale value (non-original) if you worry about such things (I don't). To avoid modifying the gun, try wearing a thin shooting glove.

Bad Mojo to change or mod them from a collector standpoint.

Shooting glove, or a band-aid on your thumb before shooting should work.

I had a hammer replaced on my Model 19 also. It was the 1/2 inch target model from S&W factory part. It to has sharp serrations and wear a glove. Old hammer was worn and the serrations were worn also so I guess I never noticed it much. But the new one it is sharp!

Put a piece of tubing on it, a bit of heat and it will give you a slick surface for your thumb.
It will be easy to remove. Or where a thumb cozy.

Shooting glove or get some self adhesive moke skin and stick a piece on your thumb.

I liked earplugs heat shrink tubing over the hammer spur idea!

Why didn't I think of that!!

Most excellent idea!!
