...items marketed to shooters are so much more expensive, yet the same thing can be had for so much less from another product that isn't marketed to shooters?


examples?

Corn cob media
Look at the prices for it marketed to reloaders.

Then look at it elsewhere, ~26 bucks shipped to your door for a 40 lb bag!

Look at the same for walnut media. Get the zilla pet bedding and its the same thing, just not marketed to us, yet its cheaper.

That's marketing 101.

Niche markets tend to pay more for items because the packages are geared toward their niche. Smart shoppers avoid these pitfalls.

And how many posts have you seen over the years where people state that they use (insert name brand gun oil here) because it is somehow better than general purpose lubricants. They never seem to be able to quantify exactly how it is better though...

Many people are willing to pay more if it comes in a small package and is labeled for the specific application they intend to use it for.

Lots of things are like this. From my background in fire/ems the simplest things can have an inflated price if marketed to a certain group.

Today's sucker could be tomorrow's ex-customer. We've all been taken at some time or another, either in the shooting market or another market. The key is to keep helping each learn.

I make my own general gun cleaner (Ed's Red)
I make my own copper remover. (Ivory Soap and Janitor Strength Ammonia)
I use Mobil1 for general gun lube.
I make by own bullets, cut down 9mm cases for my Maks, 7.62X54R to 8X56 etc. and reload my rounds of numerous calibers.
I make my own ice cream and installed my own 8K per day solar system :)
I buy bulk tobacco and roll my own smokes.
I do not get to caught up in too much marketing.

Or safety glasses, hearing protection, etc, with "Smith and Wesson" embossed on it. Or a "tactical" laptop bag peddled by the NRA as a member perk, for nearly twice what I paid for the same bag from Ranger Joe's.

Yeah, do some homework. It may well be worth it to ponder any shooting item you are looking to buy from a shooting store or website, and see if you can't find a similar item for MUCH less from Harbor Freight (ears, eyes, knee and elbow pads,) Petsmart (crushed walnut shells for case tumblers,) or auto parts stores for cleaners and lubes.

And folks spend $300.00 plus for perscription eyeglasses while I purchase mine online for $29.00 and they are coated and Bi-Focals.

Ever check the difference in price between an auto part at the dealer and a QUALITY part from a parts house?

Remember many people feel the only way to acquire quality and value it to spend more money.

Marketing. Plain and simple. It's along the same reasons why some people will pay thousands of dollars for a "name-brand" AR-15, and others will be just as happy with their "bargain barrel" AR-15.

My dad wanted to by new springs for his AR mags.

Brownells has the chrome silicon ones for 4.99 a piece.

Well being a smart shopper and went to the manufacturer, got them things for .99 cents a piece.

While I use Brownells at times, and like their sellection of goods which are almost top notch, they just about never discount to any extent.

I can't find it right now but if you would ever read their business motto you'd understand.
