I'd like to know what everyone thinks of Tom Gresham; not as a host, or a nice guy, etc; but whether or not you think he is particularly knowledgeable about firearms.

I've never heard his show, but Tom was a member at TFL...might be one here too.

He is a member here.
And he is very knowledgeable.
This poll however is pretty silly.
Listen to his show more often.

I really love his show. My only complaint is it should last about eight hours :D Not sure who "daddy" is, and not sure I care.
I'd love to see more time given to the show so TG could have more guests on for in-depth interviews, take longer calls, explore particular topics. He is extremely well informed, but obviously nobody is an expert in all things. I'd like to see him bring in some folks from the budding on-line community such as Tuco or Parallax as well. More discussions of C&R rifles, as well. But alas we're probably lucky to just get the time we have.

Knowledgable about firearms and Constitutional rights...YES. :D
Knowledgable about how to promote his radio show to potential stations and listeners...NO. :(
He's got a show that has a wide market, but he won't even tell potential listeners what stations he IS on. How are you going to improve your ratings if you don't tell your listeners where & when your show is on? :banghead:
It's a great show....when you can find it.

While Tom may not be considered 'very' knowledgable in any one specific area of firearms, he has considerable knowledge that covers a wide range of firearms types, history and topics. I feel that his passing along of information and conversations about current legislation and firearms rights issues are the most valuable contributions of his programs. He keeps up on what's happening across the country in these matters. And I do like his conversations with those who are in the industry. I learn from those too. Since I am not a collector of older firearms or hunting, I don't pay as much attention when those topics are brought up, but I know others are interested in those topics.
My regret is that our local Phoenix station (KXAM 1310) only carries two hours of the show. If I want the other hour I have to go online to KBNP.
And "daddy" is 'Grits" Gresham, a well known and respected outdoors writer for many years, I think. If I am wrong please correct me.
Now, if there was just some way to get Bart from Phx to not call in......

Tom's father is the renowned gun and outdoors writer "Grits" Gresham. Ask your uncle and father who he is if you haven't been keeping up lately:cool: .
I listen to Tom's show over the Internet feed. Usually a pretty good chew- the-fat session in my opinion.
Tom is a member here at THR as Guntalk.
Regards,
Rabbit.
...and AEKDB, Tom.

Tom manages to cover a lot of bases on his show.
I really enjoy listening to the archived shows too.
You go Tom!!:D

I refrained from voting because it seemed like a silly question. I think Tom Gresham is fairly knowledgeable on many subjects without trying to come across as a "know-it-all". I think he does just fine on his own.

I have shamelessly stolen the streaming radio links from
http://www.ocshooters.com/Gen/links.htm
http://www.wntk.com
http://www.kxam.com
http://www.kwro.com
http://www.ksbn.net
http://www.kwam.com
http://www.kbnp.com
http://www.ocshooters.com/ is a good site and well worth visiting.
Mr. Gresham’s knowledge, skills, and experience with both the shooting sports and the politics of gun ownership are not something I can judge. Mr. Gresham’s radio program is good fun and enhanced by the chat room, but suffers the two failings of all talk radio and most shooting sports media in that it can become drearily repetitious, and that it lives or dies on its success in manufacturing audiences for advertisers. Even the subject matter must be subordinate to the task of marketing. Mr. Gresham even makes that plain in his web site’s tips on how to get Guntalk (click here.) (http://www.guntalk.net/pages/?page=How%20to%20Get%20Gun%20Talk%20Locally)
Should all that seem a bit negative, please understand that I am a regular listener and participant in the chat room and have been known to call on occasion.

Seems as if most of you are not responding to the question! I listen to the show all the time. I think Tom is a charming host, very personable and very much a gentleman. The show itself often turns into one big advertisement for Leupold, Taurus, S&W, or Kimber; whoever he has for his guest that day. All of that aside; it is his knowledge of various firearms that I find lacking. I would have much preferred someone like a Ross Seyfried to host the show; but then again perhaps someone that is extremely knowledgable regarding the guns themselves would not necessarily have the personality to host the show. Perhaps we listen for different reasons! I listen to hear talk about guns; their respective actions and operating characteristic; weak and strong points; calibers they are chambered for; in other words the nuts and bolts of things. Some of you may listen for reasons such as talk about hunting, shooting games, and political issues; which I readily admit he covers very well. It is the specifics on the guns themselves I personally find lacking. And by the way; the three hour infomercials from advertisers really bother me.

These are the very reason I like the show so much. This gives the chance to hear what the people that are the backbone of the industry have to say. We get info on new products, what they are doing in development & many other things that we would never hear if these people were not on the air.
You can read about all the ballistics , & load information in most gun rags, but where else will you ever get the chance to talk to the president of a major firearms manufacture ?
I think Tom has a fantastic show, not that I wouldn't like to hear some others , with their own shows as well( Lane Simpson).
But until that day , Tom is the best in the business & he gets my support.:D

That's not quite a personal attack, but it comes close. And the "riding daddy's coat-tails" comment bothers me too. Its just not The High Road.
I don't know Tom personally, but he is a member here and he will be protected from personal attacks just like anyone else.

Just like anyone else? Oh Really! Thanks for the good laugh. I will repeat since it is obviously not sinking in; Tom is a personable, very likable man, and very much a gentleman as a host. His knowledge of firearms and ammo falls short. I DON'T SEE THE SLIGHTEST PERSONAL ATTACK IN THIS STATEMENT.

Sir, rather than being obstinate, could you please give some reasons or examples for your view? You admit that you listen for the nuts and bolts of things, however I am confident that many shooters would like to hear about hunting, RKBA, etc. rather than a detailed explaination of the action of an antique Mauser that could be found on the internet, magazines, books, etc. Admittedly, articles about hunting or RKBA could be found in magazines, on the internet, or various places as well, but rather than faulting a show and telling it to change its format, it might be easier to search for the information that interests you yourself. Just a thought.

I've never heard him on the radio. But I do find his columns useful in Guns & Ammo.

I find Tom very knowledgable, are there others with more knowledge ? sure , but I don't think they would make a better show. Remember this is on a typically liberal medium and I think Toms "everyman" personality is the primary thing that keeps GunTalk on the air. I think he's the right choice for Guns and Ammo TV as well, where the show will play to "sportsmen" , which is infinitly more accepted among general audiences.
Like it or not there are more people who like to hear about the "whole" experience , IE: the stories of friends along on a hunt , jokes and the good time had rather than " I was using a 308 built on a '98 action with a Shilen match barrel and sighted for PBR , the ammo was handloads using a 168gr boattail over xx grs of 4350 loaded on a Rock Chucker with Redding competition dies...."
I guess what I want to say is I know someone like Jeff Cooper has a lot of firearm specific knowledge, but I bet he couldn't support a diverse show like Tom does , particularly with audience participation. I give him two thumbs up ! Case
