Anybody know anything about these guns? I own one, given to me by my grandfather, don't know much about it. Thanks

What is it you would like to know that a Google search didn't turn up?

Interesting, not terribly common, almost certainly a handloader's cartridge, though a few specialty shops appear to make it. Basically a necked-down .357 Mag. case.

Ruger didn't offer it for long. Marlin made a unique rifle that also fired the cartridge, called a "Levermatic."

It is pretty much limited to varmint use, out to whatever distance you can shoot a handgun accurately.

A neat oddity.

We have the die to handload them. It seems to be a pretty cool gun. Lol

Not common.
Probably has a good resale value if you wanted to liquidate a family heirloom.

Some say there were about 3200 of them made, could be. I used one about 25 years ago and developed cast bullet loads for it, formed cases from new brass, not nickel, nickel cracks when you neck it down. Good cartridge, great gun. A few of the guns were offered new with a Bushnell Phantom scope in a rail mount, a few were 1.5X and a few 2.5X. The guns are highly sought after.
Marlin made the hammerless Model 62 in 256 and 30 Carbine and Thompson Center built 10" barrels for the Contender. Good guns and a good cartridge. Enjoy!!

THE most interesting thing about the RUGER HAWKEYE 256MAG is this; the year[ or 2 ??] after it was introduced they inadvertently left it out of the new sales catalog and nobody missed it !!!
