How does the payment process work?

I'm just curious the "order" in which I would go about paying for a NFA item.
Lets say for example I'm interested in getting a SilencerCO .22 sparrow. I would first locate my local class III dealer. Then they would order it from silencerco? Would I pay for the silencer up front? Before I send off my $200 tax form?

Or would I send in my $200 and wait for the papers to get back, then order/pay for the silencer?

Depends on the dealer and the deal you make with him. Most will want payment up front. After it's transferred to you, it's yours per BATFE. I know when I held a SOT license, I always got payment first before ANYTHING was done.

For cheaper guns like suppressors you pay 100% up front.

For a machine gun we have in stock, 50% down, remainder due when the Form 4 gets approved, 10% restocking fee if you back out.

Thanks guys, I was just seeing if I needed all my funds up front before starting the venture into NFA stuff.

My dealer for Silencerco & Gemtech wants $100 down on supressors, I send in the paperwork he fills out and pay the tax, balance due at transfer when the form comes back.

I really like his system.

The way I do it - money up front. If you pay for it halfway and never come back, I've just gone through a whole lot of effort for nothing.

You take delivery when your papers come in.

This is how most stores around here do it. However, another little gem is for folks who transfer on a TRUST. When you send the trust, and list the suppressor or machine gun or what have you on the trust, you're saying that it is property of the trust. If the trust still owes money on it, then it can't be property of the trust. It should be paid for first, then the trust is amended and submitted to the ATF for transfer tax and registration per the NFA.
