What do you store your handguns in, for rust prevention, damage (clunks and bumps) and security.

Are gun rugs a good idea?

I'm using gun rugs to help extend the useful life of my security cabinet thing. Smaller than boxes, no rust after 6 months, no damage so far. They were the real cheap ones at www.cheaperthandirt.com

I use the "Sack ups". I think they look like a "sock" . Handguns, long gun sizes available. I do check the safe from time to time, but have never had a problem. I also used these for my Shotguns that had muliple bbls. I 'cut' one in half and each bbl was put in one before going into respective hard case. Well actually used them as well in the Boyt Canvas cases with the extra bbl sleeve.

For stacking, well I put the hand gun in the "sock" and then into a cigar box. I get these free at various Tobacco shops. Cigar boxes handy for mags, speedloaders , extra parts as well. I have a standing request to save cigar boxes for other stuff as well...like 'puter stuff.

I have bought the Sack Ups locally, and ordered through Kleenbore as well. The ones bought from a local mart were of lesser quality, so I don't use those for guns, relegated to fishing rods/reels...

Using two cigar boxes and then "cut and adapt" a larger box is made. I 'adapted' one to fit a 7.5" bbl Blackhawk for instance.

Plastic boxes "sweat", the cigar ( cardboard) and the "Sack-Ups" don't seem to sweat. I guess a dry pack wouldn't hurt...just never had a problem so never tossed one in. May depend on environs of your part of the country and where safe is in the business / home.

I'm just a bit leary of foam and "rug material" alone. It is very hot and humid here in the summer. I've seen this heat and humidity start to rust a gun b/t range and home...or if left for extended time rust for sure. So for my area , and for years I've used these impregnated socks.

I also apply RIG before I stick them in the sock. Just a light coat, can't see it, really can't feel it...this seems to work for me.

I store all of my handguns in their original factory containers.
However, on occassion I do use pistol rugs as made by Koplin!
I've NEVER had a rust, mildew, or moisture problem. Of course, I
never leave them unattended very long~

Gun rugs are a good thing, as long as they don't collect moisture.

Storing firearms in their original containers is a very bad idea if the containers include foam rubber and/or some types of plastics, which can easily trap moisture and discolor bluing.
