Those of you who aren't out on Saturday night can catch Battleground on Turner Classic Movies tonight at 7 central time.
"Dedicated to the battered bastards of Bastogne," this dramatic historic film directed by William Wellman tells the story of a U.S. Army division in the European theater near the end of World War II. In a last-ditch effort to turn the tide of the war, the Germans launch a final attack that became known as the Battle of the Bulge. George Murphy, who portrays Private Ernest J. "Pop" Stazak, leads a terrific cast that also includes John Hodiak, Ricardo Montalban, and James Whitmore. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards and won two: one for its tight, unpredictable screenplay and one for its evocative black-and-white cinematography.
MPAA Rating: Not Rated.
One of the classic WWII movies.....

...for your good taste! My Dad, Robert Pirosh, wrote the screenplay to "Battleground." He based the characters and story on his experience
in the Battle of the Bulge. He wrote/directed many others(Film & TV) but "Battleground" is my favorite. "That's fer sure; that's fer DANG sure!"

Be sure to watch James Whitmore as Sgt. Kenny. He won the Academy Award for the performance.
The scene where Kenny is standing on the snow bank when the sun came out clenched the Award.
Also watch Ricardo Montalban in one of this first roles. It's a clear indication why he was considered as such a great actor, by other actors.
People fought to work with him.

An excellent WWII film. Although the characters were stereotyped, it showed the misery, filth, fear, drudgery, and triumph of the dog faced GI.
It has that post WWII feel, made in 1949, of relief that the war was over. Kids today, they don't have a clue.
Our local paper puts an American flag upon every obit that was a veteran. Most of them are from WWII. I fear that this most serious time in history will be forgotten as all of those that have participated depart.
One touching moment in the movie, to me anyway, was when the Lutheran chaplain (I am a Lutheran) gave his sermon about why we (Americans) made this trip to fight the Nazi's. Perhaps some would think it jingoistic, but not I. There is good and evil, and if one might quote the author Studs Terkel's book, this was "The Good War."
I was born after WWII but I do so appreciate the sacrifice made by all those that stopped the evil that was Germany and Japan of the time.
