The 41 Mag is a great gun. I have had several S&W since I began shooting years ago and now have the model 657. I shoot it on a regular basis.

What kind of loads do you shoot through yours? How's the recoil compared to 44Magnum factory loads?

I shoot a target load as I'm not real fond of recoil. I use 7 gr. of Unique with a 215 gr. LSWC. This is a very accurate load in my 657 with mild recoil.

That's the load I was looking at in my Lyman's book with Unique. It's going to be a target gun not artillery ;)

An event worthy of celebration. I love N-Frames and love the .41 Magnum. The two together are wonderful. Congratulations on a good one.

If you handload that gun will give you anything you want. Extremely accurate target work and/or all the wrist snapping recoil you ever wanted. I have that exact gun and have been shooting it since 1990. After a couple of summers shooting IPSC with it I found a replacement trigger for it and narrowed and rounded it off. The original wide trigger is great for SA target work but for DA will slow you down and mutate your finger. .41 Mags will blow bowling pins clean off a table and put steel targets down hard. In my opinion the 57 is the best of the S&W N frames. A 215 gr. cast bullet driven at 950 fps. will carry a lot of energy for a long distance with one of the flattest trajectories possible in a big bore revolver and is very easy to shoot. And penetrates stuff like crazy. Don't ever let anyone talk you into selling THAT gun!

Hey Walkalong,

I remember seeing yours in another thread. This is a no dash as well. Any guestimate of born on date?

I do not know. According to this thread (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=356710), sometime from 64 to 81, when the -1 change dropped the recessed cylinder.

Good choice! Welcome to the 41 Mag club.

I think you will notice a difference in recoil if you shot side by side 4" N-frames in 44 and 41 mag with normal factory loadings (240 gr and 210 gr), let's say Remington loads. But if you shot them on different days, I don't know if you could tell a difference. I can, but I am a 41 mag believer.

The thing I notice about the 41 mag is that I just shoot it well or I used to. Have been shooting mostly 22's and 38's lately.

If you aren't going to reload, start stocking up on 41 mag ammo once you know you like shooting the revolver and caliber so you don't have to worry about whether the local gun shop has any in stock when you want to shoot.

Hi Rimfire,

I reload and plan to load target loads with 215gr LSWC's. I have a couple of 44Spls & a model 29. I don't care for the recoil of full power factory loads for target shooting. I mostly shoot my 44 Spls through it.

I have a Ruger Blackhawk 4-5/8" bbl and a Smith & Wesson 57-5 Mtn Gun 4" bbl.
I handload for both, 215 cast @ 1080 fps and 210 hp's @ 1300 fps for hunting. they both group about the same, maybe the Smith is a little better due to that sweet trigger!
