wow, i am 55 years old, and tonight discovered that i am left eye dominant. i have been shooting right handed since i could pick up and shoot my dad's bb pistol. maybe that explains why i have trouble keeping both eyes open when shooting. my uncle (my dad's brother) was this way also. but i think he was much worse. he actually broke his nose firing a 10 gauge shotgun one time. a quick shot at geese. every gun i own is right handed. and at this age, i really do not think i will be selling off all my collection and trying to learn to shoot left handed. but it will be worth some experimenting when shooting pistols.

You can force your eye dominance to shift- it's not something hard wired.

your brain will always prefer to use the eye that has sharper vision.

I've found mine to shift left a few times in my life. I work outdoors and wear sunglasses all day, so I just skip cleaning the left lens as often as I clean the right. after about two weeks, I am back to right side dominance.

if you wear prescription glasses, make sure the right eye has the best correction your optometrist can provide.

Actually, it is hard-wired. Some people, however, are co-dominant, and in them the dominance can seem to shift.if you wear prescription glasses, make sure the right eye has the best correction your optometrist can provide. Actually, monovision shooting glasses (right eye focused at the front sight, left eye focused at distance) can help. A lot of pistol shooters, however, simply tilt the pistol and head and use the left eye.

Well. And close the right eye! :o (Actually, if you are left eye dominant you'll likely find it unnecessary to close the right eye while sighting with the left.)

This. Cross eye dominance can be overcome with simple training. Eye dominance is the first thing I check for when teaching new shooters.

Did you ever try covering your left eye? My father in law tried this and it helped his shooting.

i almost always close my left eye when shooting. i never even thought about why. i just knew i could aim better like that, so it is what i did.

When I was an instructor, some people could be retrained to shoot dominate eye side but for most they were better off shooting the way they had learned. It is more important in shotgun shooting than aimed shooting to use both eyes. I agree that it is hard wired but I also agree that many people can adapt with practice.
