How lucky can you get?

People always ask me how do I find such great deals on guns. I just tell them that I am always on the hunt, and I'm lucky.

Back in May of 2010, on the way home from work, I stopped off at one of the local pawn shops just to look around. I stop by this pawn shop about 3 or 4 times a week but don't find too many deals, but you never know what you will find.

I was just shooting the bull when I noticed an old pump 22 sitting off to the side away from the other 22s. I asked to look at it. When the guy handed it to me he said that it was broken. When asked what was wrong with it other then the stocks, he said that it did not eject.
I then looked at the tag and I was shocked. It had $70 on it.
I asked the guy how much would he be willing to drop the price. He said he would have to get someone else to work on the price. The older guy behind the counter then came up and I said, "I'll give you $40 out the door. He countered with $45. I came back with $42.50. He called me a dirty name and laughed and told me I had a deal.
I then saw a Remington 514 sitting next to where the pump had been. I saked to look at it. It was priced at $30. Other then the barrel pointing up a little . It looked to be in ok shape. I told the old guy that I would give him $60 for both and he called me another dirty name with a smile and said $65 out the door.
I paid for the two rifles and went home.
Here is the pump.

The pump ejects just fine, but does not feed very good. I was able to get it to feed a little better, but it needs a small bushing to fix it, which I am looking for. I will have to fix the stocks because, I have not been able to locate a different set in better shape.

I already fixed the Remington. Here is a link to the post.

Superb, Gunny. Hat's off to you from your neighbor in New Orleans. That's a real beauty, and an amazing deal. "Luck!" Ha!

Nice job OP!

I was at the local flea market a 'few' years back, and this woman that cleans houses out for a living was there...She gets to take all that she wants, sells what she does not want to keep in addition to getting paid to haul off the 'junk'...

I see a gun on her table...I pick it up and ask what she wants for it...She tells me it is 'broken', and I can have it for $30...Almost broke my arm reaching for my money clip...

I walked away from the table tightening the loose thumb screw on a Winchester Model 1906 S/L/LR pump made in 1912...

Hey HKGuns I do like my crates. They make great back drops. On one of the gun forums I post, they call them magic crates due to all the guns that show up on them.

I just got this one in and luck had a lot to do with it.
I ordered the crate for the Persian crest. It cost me $30. When the crate came in it looked like poop. :barf:
I called the wholesaller and told them I was not happy with what I got. The guy told me he was very sory and would ship me another crate at no charge.
When the new crate came in it had a extra lid for the other crate.:D

Here is a pic of the crest on a Persian Mauser.

Gunny, is that your quote at the bottom of your posts, or did you read it some where? Its a good quote and it reminds me of a story by Stephen Crane, "The Red Badge of Courage".

Yes, that is my quote.:)
It was a repsoncse to a topic on another forum. One of the members said that he wished that he could feel what the men felt that used his old surplus weapons.

I had my best gun bargain week ever a couple months ago.

I had been pestering my neighbor for years to buy a JM Marlin Ballard #5 Pacific in .45-70 from him. He also had a 1873 Colt SA in .44-40, which I wanted, but never asked about it. (got when his father died years ago and he really doesn't care for guns)

One day he came over and asked was I still intrerested in both guns? I said yes but dependent on price, when he said $1200.00 for both I couldn't say yes fast enough. The Ballard has a terrific bore and 1873 SA is tight with a good bore, got a Colt letter, the .44-40 was mfg. in 1886.

When went to local gun shop where I knew there was some .44-40 brass. I spotted something else. It was a Sako M39 almost hidden in a rack of Mosin Nagants, $150.00 price was same as for the other MN. Jumped on it like a dog on meat.

The luck hasn't been too great as of late. Last "deal" I found was a .38-40 Marlin 1894 in the 450xxx range for $200.

The luck hasn't been too great as of late.

But that could change anytime. This is the time of year when I find the best deals at pawn shops.

After Christmas, and before tax refunds. ;)

Nice stuff Gunny, and Hang Fire :)

I'm biding my time on a real Indian (with the stock decorated with tacks) 38-40. I know the family and IF they don't have one of the young'uns claim it, I'll offer a fair price. We'll see?

Stuff is like that. You gotta be ready and your gotta be patient :)
