Was just wondering why wait times are so different. Transfer to dealer took few weeks. Transfers to me take at least half a year!

He's registered as a dealer in NFA items, so the ATF processes a transfer to him differently. You, on the other hand, are an individual, and the ATF doesn't like that.

Well, the answer is not in BATFE not liking something. The horrible truth is they really don't give a rat's fanny if you buy and own a thousand machineguns and buy a dozen a week as long as you comply with the law.

Dealer to dealer transfer applications rate only a cursory look, since licensed dealers are already checked out (no records check, no fingerprints) and will seldom make any mistakes on the application forms. Also, there are relatively few dealers, and so fewer dealer to dealer transfers.

But they scrutinize an individual's application more closely for errors, plus they have to run the records check and the fingerprint check (which is often a large part of the delay since the FBI puts applicant prints in a precedence category behind criminal investigation and government employment). And of course, there are a lot more individual applications than there are dealer transfers.

Not necessarily. I do a lot more FFL to FFL transfers than I do individual.

However, as an FFL - I can send in a request for a range of items. For instance just the other day I did three silencers on one form.
