Some quotes from a police officer who was teaching a friend, who is conducting an internship, about firearms.

This was in MA.

"A bullet is like a mini-bomb"

"If you drop a bullet, it MAY expload but it's unlikely."

"There is a firing pin in the bullet, and if you drop it, it could possibly expload."

A cartridge is sort of like a bomb, but I've never heard of one accidentally exploding outside of a gun. Has anyone?

I know in Vietnam they had those rifle rounds rigged up in booby traps to injure people that stepped on them, but that's about as much as I know about cartridges being fired outside of guns (I'm lumping "zip guns" into the guns category :) ).

What was he demonstrating with, an antique pinfire gun and cartridge?

See? Proves it: only cops need guns.

He's kinda sorta tecnhically right, but from all practical purposes, he's a dumbass.

Cartridges contain a rapidly burning substance that can produce signifigant pressure when contained (but NOT an explosive) in the smokeless powder.

They are also fused with basically Cordite, which IS an explosive, one that detonates on contact at that.

Just like a 2,000lb JDAM (but, ah, less so.)

However, the primer is so hard to ignite, that it would be more like saying "a bullet is like a mini-dud!" Or "I'm an alarmast retard!"

Firing Pin, good one, wonder if he knows the difference between misdomenor and felony? (doubtful...)

Never heard of pinfire cartridges? I guess that bright cop must be quite a cartridge collector but I don't see how he can only tell half the story to his student and never mention that they've been out of production for perhaps a century.

As for mini-bombs, back in the blackpowder days some Brits decided to make explosive bullets. The center was hollowed out to take powder and a percussion type cap was placed in the nose. Like the pinfire cartridge, I don't think they've been made in over a century. I wonder why the nice officer never explained that too?

He must be on running on half a cup.;)

If you don't mind my asking, which town was this officer representing?

Can I play TheeBadOne for a moment?

Give the officer a break, and let's wait for all the facts. Could the perp ... er ... poster have misheard him? This is all just a conspiracy by the anti-LEOs to persecute all police.
"A bullet is like a mini-bomb"
It is. A metal container with an explosive charge.
"If you drop a bullet, it MAY expload but it's unlikely."
Entirely possible.
"There is a firing pin in the bullet, and if you drop it, it could possibly expload."
There is an anvil in every primer (or on the case in Berdan cartridges). Maybe that is what he intended to say?

;)
Just playin' with you, TBO.

sounds like a challenge to me. I'll bet him a penny that if i drop the bullet it won't go off. Then we'll go double or nothing on each consecutive drop. If it goes off, then i'll give him all the money i would have won on the drop. I can do this for hours.

As that great philosopher B. Bunny once said, "Ehhhh, what a maroon." :D

So are the Police in Milford, MA using Devastators?
I used to distribute those. They were fun.

Since people are getting technical in thinking of how the powder can be ignited, and the composition of the primer, then technically the officer was completely wrong. A bullet has absolutely no powder in it's composition. Neither the lead or the jacket alloy is explosive. You can drop a bullet, crush a bullet, or even expose it to extreme heat, but all you will end up with is a damaged bullet.
Now a cartridge is another story. :D
