HBWC and Unique

Hi

I´ve heard of problems with HBWC due to skirts been blown up. I´ve heard that the proper powder should prevent this to happen. So the question is...

Wich powders are more likely to cause skirt issues, those in the fast burning rate side (Like Bullseye wich is very common in HBWC recipes) or something like Unique (The one I use) wich is a slower powder?

Common sense tells me that the slower the powder the more time the base of the bullet is suffering of heat and pressure, but that won´t make me go to a faster powder. I want to use only one powder.

Thanks for your comments.

HBWC's are for target loads, so you want low velocities and light charge weights. A good manual Like lyman 49 will take that into account when publishing loads for HBWC. So if you stick to their published loads using the powders and primers they use, you should have no worries. If you want to hotrod loads don't use HBWC bullets.

Alliant 1999 data lists a 148gr LWC-Unique 3.2gr. 775fps-14,100 PSI Maximum is 3.3gr. 15,300 PSI. Pressure is what blows the skirt off, dont matter if Bullseye or Unique. The problem here is how Unique drops from the measure. As much as 3/10 gr variation is common. Bullseye does not have this problem. :)

As previously mentioned, HBWC's are for target loads and, personally, I would never use a slow pistol powder like Unique for such loads, as you will not be operating in the pressure range that Unique likes. Use of a fast pistol powder such as Bullseye, Red Dot, Solo 1000, 700X and several others, is more in line with the pressure/velocity level you want to be in.

Well, it´s time to give Bullseye a try.
Thank you.

You can use Bullseye, Winchester 231 or Accurate #2 with HBWC bullets. They all work well, but my go to powder for this application is Bullseye.

Hope this helps.
