During the DC Sniper adventure there were numerous posts about individuals in the DC area that were contacted by local LE concering various rifles they owned.

IIRC some were asked for.....or compelled.... to surrender their firearms for ballistic finger printing.

What ever happened to those folks and their rifles?
Were these rifles returned?

Did the NRA ever make a statement about this or anyone in the media ever cover this story and its outcome?

This topic raised quite a bit of concern during the reign of the Snipers but I have seen no followup.

Most were returned. However, those persons who were found to be illegally possessing the weapon did not get them back. Also, the police then went over all the many "tips" they received and pursued those where it was indicated through further research that the persons named were not eligible to possess firearms.

Another reason not to reveal your hobby to casual acquaintances. Pissed off ex-spouses, of which many tips came from, are a different problem.
