Hunter125 February 2, 2012, 10:19 PM I am wanting to get a better holster than my cheapo $10 IWB. I like the idea of a supertuck and have no doubt that they are great, but I have one concern. I have an XDsc and I don't want the barrel to stick out the bottom, the sights to catch on my pants under the holster, etc. I just don't want to pay that much for a holster I might not like.
I have also considered something like a summer special. What's my best option here?

guyfromohio February 4, 2012, 05:39 PM I'll be able to add more in 4-6 weeks.
Sam1911 February 4, 2012, 05:57 PM The xDsc is a pretty short-barreled gun. If it sticks out of the holster at all, it sure won't be by much. Not nearly so much that it would be likely to snag your pants. I've carried much larger firearms in similar open-bottom IWB holsters and never had a pants-snagging incident.
As to whether or not you might not like it, well, that's the way holsters tend to go. You put your money up and give it a whirl. :) If you really don't like it, you'd be able to sell it easily for most of what you paid for it.
The Summer Special is a fine holster, but a bit dated in design. The belt loops are right on top of the holster, which concentrates the gun, holster, and attachments in one spot on your belt, making the whole package fairly thick. More advanced designs, like the Milt Sparks Versa Max, tend to move the loops fore and aft of the holster pouch to spread that bulk over more real estate.
Also, and probably even more important, with the belt loops fixed right to the holster mouth, it isn't tuckable, so you've lost one of the features you'd be buying with the SuperTuck.
Telekinesis February 4, 2012, 06:12 PM I'd say go with the supertuck. Sam is exactly right about the thickness issue when you have the belt loops right over the holster. I find that thickness is the hardest thing to deal with when concealing a gun, length doesn't matter much when talking about IWB. The spacing between the belt loops on the supertuck really helps keep the gun in place and distribute the weight as well. As to the price issue, that's something everyone has to deal with. It takes a while to get used to the idea of an expensive holster, but once you start carrying with one, you'll thank yourself every day you put it on that you bought it.
I carry a Sig 228 with a supertuck and have never had any problems with the sights catching on anything. I doubt you'd have much of an issue with a gun as short as the XDsc. Google "XDsc supertuck" and look at how little of the slide is exposed. There's not much at all on the muzzle end.
wrs840 February 4, 2012, 06:24 PM I own three Supertucks and they are my favorite. Sam1911 is correct though, holsters are a personal preference that no one can predict for you. Go on XDTalk.com and then to the "Crossbreed" section. Look for the "Blem" thread. You can buy a non-returnable "Blem" for half-price or so (cash) and get it in less than a week. I've bought two Supertucks and one QuickClip this way, no complaints.
Or pay full-price on the Crossbreed home-site and have a right of return if you don't like it for any reason. You may wait a month or so for a new one though. I personally like the Cowhide as well or better than the upcharge Horsehide... it's a tad softer.
Sam1911 February 4, 2012, 06:24 PM And $69 sure isn't "much" for a good holster.
With the CrossBreed type holsters you are able to take advantage of the fact that they don't use a lot of high-quality hand work, like molding leather to the gun, stitching multiple layers together, finishing and dying edes and such.
The fact that they use a few molded plastic parts riveted or bolted to a plain, unmolded piece of leather makes them very economical compared to many more traditional holsters offering similar comfort and fit.
RedAlert February 4, 2012, 06:26 PM Most likely this isn't a stock item just sitting on the shelf. This gives you the opportunity to contact the maker to request he make sure the barrel does not protrude past the holster bottom. If it can't be done by him, there are others out there willing to do minor custom work on their basic designs.
SEE IT LIKE A NATIVE February 4, 2012, 06:32 PM I carry a Glock 30 sf in a supertuck and have never had a problem with the gun hanging up in the holster !Kevin
bigfatdave February 4, 2012, 06:41 PM belt loops are right on top of the holster, which concentrates the gun, holster, and attachments in one spot on your belt, making the whole package fairly thick. this is a very important consideration
I have three SuperTucks, and all three let the muzzle hang out a bit.
It is not a problem, the pants don't get torn up in that spot. My favorite pants did, in the long run, develop some thinning where the screws that hold the clips on rub ... after years ... with the phillips head booggered up a bit by me. The solution was two-fold, I replaced the screws with really cheap allen-head screws from the hardware store to prevent future scraping and I put iron-on patches in those spots inside my favorite pants, because they're just too damn comfy to discard.
I would suggest EMailing or calling the nice folks at CrossBreed and asking about a longer Kydex shell if you're really hung up on the concept, I'd imagine they could do it, possibly for a nominal fee (skip the combat cut, by the way)

I just checked the wife's XD9sc in her Ohai, the Kydex extends to perhaps 1/2" behind the front sight
I am also reminded of pictures someone posted a while back, where they made a little flap with leather to cover the muzzle and prevent wear on the pants, I think it was just a square of leather glued to the Kydex and riveted to the holster body ... an easy DIY project if you don't care how pretty it looks in the end (and you don't, it's an IWB holster, who cares?)
Hunter125 February 5, 2012, 06:43 PM Thanks for the replies. I know that ST's are not too expensive in the long run. I guess my point was to see if the muzzle sticking out was something I should be concerned about, but it sounds like it's not.
Mr.510 February 8, 2012, 05:33 AM I've carried an XD45C in a Comp-Tac MTAC daily for a few years and absolutely love it. It's a bit more expensive than the Supertuck but it is an exceedingly well built holster. The leather is two layers except where the slide is so it's no thicker than a Supertuck but has stiffer 'wings' that it hangs from. The threaded inserts sandwitch between the two layers so there's only leather against your body. It also offers interchangeable shells. For a gun like the XD you can get a closed-end shell like I prefer or an open ended one if you carry several slide lengths or have an extended length barrel. I only carry the XD in it but as advertised you can change shells using a hex-head screwdriver in less than a minute. That means you could save a whole bunch of money on holsters if you carried several different pistols.
Many other hybrid holsters have popped up in recent years, shop around the perfect one for you is out there.
Hunter125 February 8, 2012, 08:11 AM Thanks for the info .510. I remembered seeing some closed ended holsters like that, but couldn't remember who made them. I will have to check the Comp Tacs out.

pingpingping February 8, 2012, 12:08 PM I have three SuperTucks, and all three let the muzzle hang out a bit.
I have two similarly styled holsters...I think getting your sights snagged on your clothing is a non-issue. Proceed with vigor!
Hunter125 February 9, 2012, 08:16 AM JTQ, those garrett holsters look nice. Do you find any issues with the clips/loops not being far from the gun? Seems like the further you spread it out the more stable it would be. I do like the option of the loops.
JTQ February 9, 2012, 01:17 PM I don't have any first hand experience with the Garrett Fusion holster. It is a brand new model, just hitting their catalog in December. I do have a Silent Thunder OWB holster that is a real pleasure to use. The leather lined kydex is one of things you need to experience to appreciate.
Most of the feedback on the Fusion I've seen on other forums have been positive. Stability has not been a complaint, and most have commented about how stable they are. The only complaints I've seen have focused on either too much or too little sweat shield coverage. You just can't make everybody happy. Garrett Industries has indicated a willingness to adjust the coverage as needed by the buyer.
